Early Life

Born Jewish in Budapest, Hungary in 1928, Lantos joined the resistance during the Nazi occupation and moved to the United States in 1947. After receiving his doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley in 1953, Lantos became a professor of economics and eventually, an analyst and consultant.

Political Career

In 1980, Lantos ran for Congress in California's 12th district and won the election by 5,700 votes. In his over 27 years of service, Lantos was a strong supporter of environmental issues, women's reproductive rights, and gay rights. He was also initially a supporter of the 2003 invasion of Iraq, although he opposed the troop surge of 2007. Lantos died of esophageal cancer on February 11, 2008. An April special election to fill Lantos's seat was won by Jackie Speier.
