Tom Gorzelanny

Tom Gorzelanny is a left-handed pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates. After attending Marist High School in Chicago, Gorzelanny went on the play baseball at Triton College. In 2003 the Pirates selected Gorzelanny in the 2nd round of the amateur draft. After a couple of years in the Pirates farm system as a pitching prospect, Gorzelanny made his major league debut for the Pirates on September 20, 2005. In a rough outing, Gorzelanny pitched just over four innings, and allowed 5 runs on 7 hits. Gorzelanny recorded his first MLB win in 2006, and in 2007 Gorzelanny won 14 games as a member of the pirates starting rotation.

Strengths

Gorzelanny throws a 90+ mph fastball, which he can complement with a change-up. He has a very good slider, and does not get rattled with runners on base[1].

Weaknesses

Command issues have led to an inconsistency in Gorzelanny when it comes to throwing strikes on the first pitch of an at-bat[2]. Gorzelanny walks too many batters, and strikes out too few.
