The city of Tokyo is the home of the Japanese government, and is one of the largest metropolitan cities in the world. Toyko consists of several smaller municipalities in the entire Greater Tokyo Area. The city has a population of over eight million people, the greater area has a total population of over 35 million people. Tokyo means "eastern capitol".

Greater Tokyo Area

The Greater Tokyo Area is the largest metropolitan area in the world. The greater Toyko Area of Japan consists of the sub-regions (called prefectures) Chiba, Kanagawa, Saitama and Tokyo Metropolis. These sub-regions are then broken down into 23 separate municipalities commonly known as the "twenty-three wards".
