Background
As a tradition each year, dozens of Oregon football players go inner tubing down the McKenzie river as a group before two-a-day practice starts. On July 13, Doxey went with a group of players to the river. Instead of waiting for the tubes to be blown up, Doxey and a few friends decided to jump into the river from the 40 foot bridge nearby. While the others made it to shore, Doxey never did. He was rescued from the water by a passing-by boat about ten minutes after entering the water. Although CPR was attempted, he was declared dead at the hospital several hours later.1
