Democratic Florida Rep. Tim Mahoney allegedly had an affair campaign staffer Patricia Allen, in 2006.
Mahoney later admitted to having multiple affairs and his wife filed for divorce on October 20, 2008. Although Mahoney said he did nothing criminally wrong and promised to stay in Florida's 16th district race, he decided to forgo a debate with his opponent on October 24, 2008, because the event would be televised.1

Affair Scandal
In early October 2008, ABC News reported that Mahoney paid Allen $121,000 to prevent a sexual harassment lawsuit. Mahoney admitted to having multiple affairs, but claimed he broke no laws and planned on staying in the congressional district race. On October 20, 2008, Mahony's wife filed for divorce.4 On October 23, 2008, it was reported that Mahoney would only participate in a debate against his opponent if the event was not televised. When he was told it would be televised, he dropped out.1
Ethics Investigation
Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives called the House Ethics Committee to investigate Mahoney's conduct.5
