Obama Cover

The July 2008 cover of the magazine (entitled "The Politics of Fear") featured a drawing of Barack Obama dressed in a turban giving a fist bump to his wife, Michelle. She sports a machine gun and wears combat fatigues.

Both presumptive presidential nominees John McCain and Barack Obama went on the record calling the picture "tasteless and offensive."³

The New Yorker editor David Remnick responded by noting that his controversial cover was a piece of satire. Remnick stated, "satire is part of what we do, and it is meant to bring things out into the open, to hold up a mirror to the absurd."⁴
