You play on Koholint Island as the titular hero Link. After a storm wrecks your ship, you awaken in a hut on the Island and are told that the only way to go back to Hyrule is to awaken the Wind Fish. The only way to wake it up is to play eight magical instruments that are hidden throughout the island and guarded by monsters and, traps, and puzzles.

All the action takes place in a 2-D overhead view and all battles are done in real-time with no random battles. You start off with your sword and your shield. Like previous Zelda games, you can charge up your sword for a stronger attack. The dungeons are themed and each has a shape befitting its name and enemies to match. There is one important new item in each dungeon which generally is required for completion of the dungeon. The game also makes you search for certain items such as: bombs, the hookshot, the boomerang, and the bow. These items can be equipped and you can assign a button for their use (A for sword and B for other items). In addition to finding the item and earning another heart in each dungeon, Link can gain power by finding items hidden around the world.
