Story
The Last Remnant focuses on the story of Rush Sykes, a young man who sets off on an adventure to rescue his kidnapped sister. Rush comes from a humble village, but quickly gets swept up in a large-scale drama involving the fate of the world and the Remnants. The Remnants are massive artifacts, like giant swords, that have been left behind by an ancient civilization and which stand at the center of all of society. In addition to a central storyline, the game will also feature numerous side stories and non-linear paths, a feature Square Enix hopes will give the game worldwide appeal.4
Gameplay
The Last Remnant will have a typical RPG structure. The player will move from towns, interact with non-player characters and explore dungeons. Notably, it will feature a brand-new battle system that focuses on multiple groups of party members at the same time, or "unions". The player will issue general commands to "unions," which AI will then follow, allowing for the ability to oversee large-scale battles with ease. During character attacks, the player must follow on-screen prompts to input button commands rapidly, not unlike mechanics seen in God of War and Resident Evil 4. There are no random battles, and battles can be chained successively, which may reap better rewards for victory.5
