Background

The Far Side depicted human outsiders and anthropomorphic characters in wry, "unusual" and sometimes "disturbing" situations.² Despite criticism by some readers who found the material offensive, 1,900 newspapers eventually published the comic.³

As its popularity grew, images from the strip could be found on posters, cards and other merchandise.² In 1990 and 1994, Larson won Reuben Awards for his work.⁴

In 1995, after drawing over 4,000 panels of The Far Side, Larson stopped the series. He was reportedly unhappy with its decline in quality and feared it would become mediocre.⁵ The Far Side books and other products continue to be sold around the world.
