The Argentine
The Argentine is the first part of Steven Soderbergh's Che, a two-part biopic of Ernesto "Che" Guevara. The Argentine chronicles Guevara in the 1950s when he met Fidel Castro, and embarked on a "successful insurgency" to overthrow Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista. The second part of Che, Guerrilla, follows Guevara through his failed Bolivian campaign, which led to his execution.1
Though Benicio del Toro won a "Best Actor" prize at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival,2 Che received an "underwhelming" response following its premiere there, according to The Hollywood Reporter. IFC Films purchased the North American rights to Che for a "low seven-figure deal" later that year3
In December 2008, IFC will release the four-hour Che in New York City and Los Angeles to qualify it for possible Oscar contention. The following month, The Argentine and Guerrilla will be released individually.3/
