HALFTIME

  • At the Half: Louisville leads Tennessee 37-30
  • HALFTIME STATS:
    • For Louisville: 12-28 from the floor, 4-12 from 3-point land, 9-10 at the charity stripe, 22 rebounds (6 offensive), and 14 turnovers committed. Scorers: McGee and Smith have 9, Caracter has 6 - Clark & Williams have 6 rebounds each, Padgett has just 2 points in the first half.
    • For Tennessee: 10-28 from the field, 2-9 from 3-point range, 8-11 at the line, 13 rebounds, 8 steals, and 11 turnovers. Scorers: T. Smith has 10, J. Smith has 8, and Chism has 6.
    • Reset: No one with more than 2 fouls, possession arrow belongs to Tennessee.
    • The first half saw Louisville play smart with the basketball on offense, getting quality scoring opportunities, while the Vols went nearly 8 minutes without a field goal, committing numerous turnovers and bad shots. As the half progressed, Tennessee finally found it's scoring touch, and has actually been effective at the line. The Cardinals are up by 7 at the break, but with 14 turnovers committed and only 12 field goals made, they probably feel like they should be ahead by a 15 or so, which the Vols should be encouraged by.

First Half

  • 0:00: Louisville leads 37-30 - McGee gets the roll as buzzer sounds

  • 3:13: Louisville leads 31-23 - J. Smith makes 1 of 2 at line
  • 3:14: TV TIMEOUT - The Vols are starting to find their legs with their scattering style of run-and-gun ball, but it also leads to occasional breakdowns, and easy buckets the other way for Louisville. Only reason Tennessee is even in this game right now is because Louisville has committed 14 turnovers in this half alone.

  • 9:27: Louisville leads 22-8 - J. Smith hits a 3-pointer
  • 10:29: Travel violation on Louisville
  • 10:44: TV TIMEOUT - Vols are really struggling getting a quality look at the basket on offense, while the Cards are moving the moving ball well in the offensive zone, setting good screens to get outside shooting chances for McGee. Tennessee Louisville Pre-Game Analysis

  • If you like high-energy basketball led by two high-profile coaches, then the match-up featuring the Volunteers and the Cardinals is right in your wheelhouse. Tennessee has been ranked in the top 5 all season, in large part because of their depth. At least a dozen players averaged at least 10 minutes per game this season, which means they have a lot of fouls to give. Look for them to try and clog the middle and frustrate David Padgett inside. They are a very athletic team that likes to push the ball. However, the lack of a true point guard and quality free throw shooting nearly cost them the Butler game, and might be weaknesses the Cardinals try to exploit. Yet Louisville is also prone to clanking it from the charity stripe themselves, and if Padgett is taken away, the Cardinals will need another scorer, like Terrence Williams, to step up and deliver. It wouldn't be a Rick Pitino team if they didn't create turnovers and easy baskets with pressure defense. How the Vols guards handle this pressure, especially off of made baskets, may tell the story for this game.
