Tammy Thomas

Guide Note: Tammy Thomas is a former Olympic Cyclist who is involved in the BALCO Steroids scandal. She competed as a Short-Track Sprinter, and won the 2002 Track Cycling World Cup in that event. Prosecutors have argued that she was a hard core abuser of steroids. She made headlines when an olympic drug tester testified in court that during an unannounced visit, she appeared to interrupt Miss Thomas while she was shaving her face. Her lawyers have argued that she is simply the latest victim of a trend by prosecutors to target elite athletes. The case is considered by many legal experts as a preview of what may lie ahead for Barry Bonds and his similar perjury case.
On April 5th, 2008 a jury found that she was guilty of three perjury counts and one count of obstruction of justice. She will be sentenced on July 18, 2008.
