According to officials in Afghanistan's Arghandab district, an area located just north of the southern city of Kandahar, Taliban fighters overran several villages in mid-June, 2008. The capture of the villages came just three days after 900 prisoners, including 390 Taliban fighters, escaped from a Kandahar prison.

The Kandahar Region
The region around the city of Kandahar is notorious for being a hotbed of Taliban activity. Officials say that the Arghandab district is difficult to control, and that even during the war against the Soviet Union in the late 1970s and 1980s, those villages were never pacified.
