Background
The initial concept for the Survivor Series was to feature tag team elimination matches. Teams were comprised of four or five wrestlers that could be eliminated by pinfall, submission, count-out, or disqualification.
The last team standing after all opposing members were eliminated won the match. If only one wrestler remained on the winning team, he was named the "sole survivor."2
In later years, the pay-per-view also featured traditional singles matches on the card. At the 2002 Survivor Series, the WWE introduced the Elimination Chamber in an attempt to increase interest in the event.
The chamber, comprised of chain and steel, is a modification of a regular elimination match (only without disqualifications and count-outs).
