Subway Project
During the Islamic Council of North America's "Subway Project," New York subway cars will feature pro-Islamic advertisements. The campaign is reportedly an attempt to dispel common misconceptions about Muslims and their religion.1
Fast Facts
- Scheduled to run for four weeks in September, 2008, the Muslim month of Ramadan1
- 1,000 subway cars will feature the ads
- A representative reported that the ads are not an attempt to convert people to Islam2
- Approximately 140 million people ride the New York subway each month1
Controversial Spokesperson
A promotional video for the project uploaded to YouTube in July of 2008 features Siraj Wahhaj speaking about the Subway Project. Wahhaj, an Imam at the Al-Taqwa mosque in Brooklyn, was listed as an unindicted co-conspirator of the 1993 terrorist bombing of the World Trade Center.3
