Students for a Free Tibet

Guide Note: The university-based activist group Students for a Free Tibet (SFT) was founded by Tibetans and their supporters in 1994 in New York City, with the aim of advocating for Tibetan Independence from China. They gained some level of fame and prominence by sponsoring major events, (such as the Lollapalooza festivals) and organizing the Tibetan Freedom Concerts from 1996-2001.

In 2008, in anticipation of the 2008 Olympics hosted by Beijing, China, the SFT has orchestrated or participated in a number of protests around the globe, many of them following the path of the Olympic Torch. In Westminster, England and San Francisco, California, banners reading "One World, One Dream, Free Tibet 08" were displayed along the torch's planned route.
