Although it cuts a regal figure reminiscent of the Egyptian Mau, the Sphynx cat only came into existence in 1966, with the birth of a hairless kitten in Toronto, Canada.¹ Although the mutation that causes feline hairlessness has been known as far back as the Aztecs, the Sphynx is the first hairless cat that has been bred specifically for that trait. Referred to as "hairless," the Sphynx actually does have a very fine, short coat, comparable to peach-fuzz. ²

Hypoallergenic?

Although someone who is plagued by cat allergies may have a significantly less acute reaction to a Sphynx than a fluffy Persian, Sphinx cats are not allergen-free.³ It is not fur that causes cat allergy, but a compound in feline saliva and skin; fur only acts to disperse it more widely. According to the Cat Fanciers' Association, some cat lovers who suffer with allergies may find a Sphynx to be a comfortable companion.¹
