Guide Note: The South Stream Pipeline is a proposed project to transport natural gas from Russia to Italy. The project will take advantage of the Blue Stream pipeline already in place through Turkey, Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, and Austria. The pipeline is expected to be constructed beneath the Black Sea and connect with Europe in Greece. The project is seen as a rival to the Nabucco pipeline project, which is being backed by the European Union. Some critics argue that the pipeline will infringe on the territorial rights of the Ukraine.

The South Stream Pipeline is expected to be completed in 2013 and cost as much as $20-30 billion. The final feasibility study is expected to be released sometime in 2008. Fast Facts:
