Soul Coughing was a 1990s alternative rock band that casually infused a rock sound with hip-hop and jazz. After eight years and three studio albums, the band broke up in 2000.

Early Career

Mike Doughty, going by the name M. Doughty, was a folk singer, film critic and slam poet in New York City, and a member of the avant-garde music community that formed around The Knitting Factory venue. He gathered the band together from New York friends and acquaintances from school, and they performed together for the first time in March of 1992 as "M. Doughty's Soul Coughing," calling their music "Deep Slacker Jazz."

Recordings

In addition to the band's three albums for Warner subsidiary Slash Records, the band appeared on the soundtracks to the X-Files Movie, Batman and Robin, Tommy Boy and Spawn, and released the Best Of collection Lust in Phaze.

Breakup and Solo Career

The band broke up in 2000 over financial disputes. Doughty currently records as a solo artist, and has released three albums of his own, along with a single for the Grey's Anatomy soundtrack. Mark De Gli Antoni now works exclusively on soundtrack music. Steinberg and Gabay still record together as UV Ray.
