Scylla and Charybdis

Chapters eight and nine in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood are named after two monsters from Greek mythology: Scylla and Charybdis. In the The Odyssey, Homer writes that the two monsters guarded the Strait of Messina between Italy and Sicily. Oddyseus had to pass this waterway to continue his journey.¹

Angel Isle in Sonic 3

Angel Island first appeared in the game Sonic the Hedgehog 3. In that game it is a floating island and is home to the Master Emerald.²
