Snowshoes are footwear made for walking on the snow. The primary purpose of the snowshoe is to prevent a foot from sinking into the snow, while distributing body weight evenly over a larger surface.

History

Snow Shoes were first used as a means to walk in heavy snow by indigenous people. They were constructed by wood, leather, and rawhide and had a weaved pattern on the sole of the shoe to prevent the accumulation of snow. They are roughly twice the size of the foot. A normal shoe fits on top of the base of the snowshoe than is tied or strapped on. In the modern era the snow shoe is used by hikers and snow activity enthusiasts who travel in areas of deep snowfall. Because of the large size of the shoe, walking in a pair is physically demanding, sometimes trekking poles compliment the shoes to help maintain balance.
