Smoke detectors (or smoke alarms) are relatively inexpensive devices that, in the event of a fire, detect the resulting smoke and sound an extremely loud alarm that alerts those nearby they should find the nearest exit to safety.

Runs on a 9-volt battery or sometimes on 120-volt current from a house
Most models make a distinctive chirping sound when the battery runs low
Dust, insects, and power interruptions may also cause the chirp
Batteries should be changed once a year
