Shigellosis

Shigellosis is a bacterial infection in which the Shigella bacteria is ingested and infects the intestines. The bacteria attacks the walls of the intestines causing severe abdominal pain and watery to bloody diarrhea.¹

Transmitted by fecal contamination of water and food or hand to hand contact¹
Treated with fluids
Most recover within a week without antibiotics¹
Prevented by hand washing after using the bathroom and changing diapers¹
Onset of symptoms usually occurs 12 hours to several days after infection¹
High-risk locations: Daycare centers. military camps and other care facilities²

Symptoms

Common symptoms include painful, watery diarrhea that may have blood or mucous, fever, increased number of bowel movements. In severe cases, weight loss and dehydration are common, without treatment shock and death can occur.³

United States Statistics

Each year, approximately 500,000 people get shigellosis in the United States.⁴
