Segregation Boxes
The U.S. military in Iraq uses "segregation boxes" to isolate violent Iraqi prisoners. The boxes are essentially just wooden crates with mesh that measure as little as 3 feet by 3 feet by 6 feet tall. The pictures released by the U.S. military on August 7, 2008, do not show a box that small.
Fast Facts:
- Made from wood and mesh
- Military released photos of the boxes after a blogger filed a Freedom of Information Act request in 2005
- Military say the boxes are "humane"
- Human rights groups concerned about: heat in the boxes, provision of food and water
