Struggled Early On

Despite being the grandson of the great Man o' War, Seabiscuit struggled in the early stages of his career. As a 2-year old, the horse lost 10 straight races, a streak that would eventually extend to 17 straight. He had what horse experts would consider a mediocre year as a 3-year old, placing in the money in only 12 of 35 races.² He was considered an after thought when he was sold in 1936 to Charles S. Howard.

Hit His Stride Later in Life

Howard paired new trainer Tom Smith and jockey Red Pollard with Seabiscuit, and the combination proved to be successful. The horse would win the 1938 Horse of the Year, winning 11 of 15 races that year, including tying a then record seven straight stakes races. Then in 1938, Seabiscuit won a match race against Triple Crown winner War Admiral to cement his place in racing history.² Since his passing in 1947, his legend has continued to grow thanks to several books and documentary films. In 2003, a theatrical film called Seabiscuit starring Tobey Maguire and Jeff Bridges, was nominated for seven Academy Awards.
