Salmonella are a group of bacteria that live in the intestines of animals and are spread through fecal contamination of food, water and surfaces.

The infection begin with ingestion of the bacteria. The salmonella bacteria travels through the stomach and adheres to the lining of the small intestine. Within 12 to 72 hours the infection will cause diarrhea, stomach cramps and fever. These symptoms usually last four to seven days.¹

Poultry, meat and eggs are the most common carriers of salmonella. Properly handling and cooking these foods will prevent infection.¹

Reptiles are known for being carriers. In 1975, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention banned the sale of turtles with a shell of under four inches. An estimated 90% of turtles carry the bacteria. Infection can be prevented by throughly washing hands after handling birds or reptiles or anything associated with them. One case of salmonella infection was reported due to a baby being bathed in a sink where a turtle's waste was disposed.²
