Early History

The franchise was originally founded in 1945, as the Rochester Royals, part of the National Basketball League (NBL). They played one season in the Basketball Association of America, before joining the NBA in 1949. They won their first and only NBA Championship in 1951, then the team was moved to Cincinnati in 1957. 15 seasons later they moved to Kansas City and were renamed the Kings. The franchise made their most recent move in 1985, settling in Sacramento, California.
