Early Life
Robert Selden Duvall was born in San Diego, California on January 5, 1931. He would attend Servern School in Maryland, and The Principa in Missouri. He would later move on to attend Principia College. He would serve in the United States Army for a year. After his discharge he studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse under the tutelage of Sanford Meisner.
Film Career
Duvall's acting career would begin with character roles in television series such as Playhouse 90 and Alfred Hitchcock Presents. He would garner national attention for his role in the classic film To Kill a Mockingbird. In the following years, he would establish himself as an outstanding and popular character actor with his work in such films as True Grit, Bullit and The Chase. In the 1970's, Duvall would establish himself as one of the acting icons of his generation with classic work in the films The Godfather, THX-1138, Network and Apocalypse Now. He has continued his artistic excellence throughout the modern era with Academy Award nominated performances in The Great Santini, The Apostle and A Civil Action. He won an Oscar for Best Actor for his work in Tender Mercies and an Emmy award for his work in Broken Trail. He is now widely regarded as one of the greatest living American actors in the history of cinema.
