Early Life

Rafael Jose Betancourt was born in Cumana, Venezuela, on April 29, 1975. In 1993, he signed as a free agent with the Boston Red Sox. He stayed in the Red Sox organization until 1999, when he was released by the team. In 2001, he signed with the Cleveland Indians.¹

Pro Career

On July 13, 2003, Betancourt made his Major League Baseball debut with the Cleveland Indians. In his first season, he appeared in 33 games and finished the campaign with 2 wins and a 2.13 earned run average. In 2005, Betancourt was suspended for 10 days for testing positive for banned substances.² In 2007, he appeared in 68 games and earned five wins with an ERA of 1.47.³
