The player takes the form of a male pokemon trainer who sets out on a quest to battle gym leaders and the elite four, along the way catching and training numerous pokemon.

The game plays similar to other games in that you must collect various pokemon and fight them against other pokemon in the gyms and finally to beat the top pokemon trainers. All pokemon have an exploitable weakness (for example, a water Pokémon like Squirtle can really put the hurt on a fire Pokémon like Charmander) You catching by first weakening them as much as possible, yet without draining all of their hit points, before trying to capture them with one of those poké balls. You can have up to six different Pokémon and each one involved in a battle gains experience points. As Pokémon level up, they gain new abilities, generally get stronger, and sometimes evolve into stronger versions of themselves. You can only learn three moves for the different Pokemon so you will have to make choices of which moves to forget.
