Edgar Allan Poe was an American author who was associated with the Romantic Movement in American literature. He mainly published poetry and short stories. He is considered an early contributor to the science fiction¹ and detective fiction novels.²

Moonlighting Cryptographer

In addition to literature, Poe was active in the field of cryptography, the study and practice of hiding information within codes. At his request, readers sent cryptograms to Poe and he would publish the solutions. In all, Poe published more than 100 solutions.⁴ Two puzzles sent in by a Mr. W. B. Tyler were left unsolved until nearly 150 years later. Gil Broza officially solved them on October 13, 2000. never solved, and continue to be a source of mystery today.⁵
