Peter Falk is an American actor best known for playing Lt. Columbo on the television series Columbo and for his artistic partnership with director John Cassavetes.

Background

Despite his family's Jewish ancestry, Falk was brought up in a secular household and grew up surrounded by the kids of New York’s Italian community. After graduating from high school, Falk joined the United States Merchant Marines as a cook, before completing a B.A. in political science at the New School for Social Research in 1951. Falk earned an M.A. in public administration from Syracuse University in 1953. Falk was unsuccessful in obtaining a job with the CIA before becoming a management analyst with the Connecticut State Budget Bureau in Hartford. After deciding to be an actor and studying at the White Barn Theatre in Westport, Connecticut, Falk left his job and moved to Greenwich Village in 1956. From there he appeared on stage and in films until landing the role that would define his career - Lt. Columbo.
