On August 12, 2008, starting pitcher Paul Byrd of the Cleveland Indians was traded to the Boston Red Sox. The Indians will receive either cash or a player to be named later. In 2008, Byrd had a record of seven wins and 10 losses with a 4.53 earned run average before the trade. The deal was made on the heels of the announcement that Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield would be placed on the 15-day disabled list with shoulder pain.

Paul Byrd Background
Byrd previously played for the New York Mets, Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Cleveland Indians. He was elected to the All-Star team in 1999. In 2007, he finished the season with a record of 15 wins and 8 losses. During the 2007 playoffs, he admitted to using human growth hormones to allegedly recover from an injury. Byrd is known for his excellent control. In 2008, before the trade, he had walked only 1.6 men per nine innings.
