Paro Robot
The Paro Robot is robotic baby harp seal developed by Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. It is designed to provide therapeutic assistance to nursing home residents and children with developmental delays like Autism.
Paro features a soft furry coat and reacts to petting and stroking by blinking its eyes and moving its flipper. If it is handled roughly, it cries out, but it reacts positively to soft petting. It also sleeps and requires simulated feedings. The robot acts as a surrogate for a real pet, which has been shown in studies to reduce stress levels in all subjects and improve social skills of children with developmental delays. Although it was initially expected to cost between $2,500 and $3,000, the actual price is around $4,700.
