PS3 Firmware 2.40 Problems

There have been recent complaints about the firmware "bricking" PS3's after the update.¹ There have been widespread accounts of system lock-ups, problems downloading the software, and trouble restarting the system. Users have complained that after updating their system, the SIXAXIS controller has problems syncing and there is no audio or video. SCEA has removed the firmware 2.40 from it's update server on July 2, 2008 due to the update negatively affecting users' PS3s. SCEA stated that they were investigating the complaints. SCEA has made no official statement regarding the exact problem, and Sony has not made any statements concerning the matter. Currently there is no information on how to fix this problem or if Sony will replace damaged PS3s.
