History

In 1851, Northwestern University was founded to serve the Northwest Territory, an area that now includes the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and part of Minnesota. In 1853, a 379-acre tract of land was purchased 12 miles north of Chicago. The campus helped develop the land around it, which would be named Evanston after one of the university's founders, John Evans.

Northwestern officially opened its doors in 1853 with two faculty members and 10 students.¹

The Campus

There are two campuses located on Lake Michigan: a 240-acre campus in Evanston, the first suburb north of Chicago, and a 25-acre campus in downtown Chicago.¹
