The game initially has two difficulty settings to choose from, the Path of the Acolyte and the Path of the Warrior. As its name suggests, The Path of the Acolyte is intended for players who are new to the series and unfamiliar with the combat style. The Path of the Warrior is for hardcore players or those who have played other games in the Ninja Gaiden series. In this more difficult mode, enemies are more aggressive and cunning. After completing the game, two additional difficulty settings become available, the Path of the Mentor and The Path of the Master Ninja.
