Nicanor Duarte

Nicanor Duarte is a former President of Paraguay. He was the 11th consecutive member of the ruling Colorado Party to be elected. Duarte is a strong opponent of neo-liberalism and free trade.¹ Though he campaigned on a platform of political and social reform, Duarte's failure to make good on his promises led to extremely low approval ratings.

In addition to his opposition towards neo-liberalism and free trade, Duarte campaigned on promises of reducing government corruption and nationwide poverty. His failure to produce tangible results on his campaign promises led to approval ratings below 50% in August, 2007² and only 5% by March, 2008³

Duarte was not only the 11th, but also the last consecutive Colorado President. He officially endorsed Blanca Ovelar, a fellow member of the Colorado Party, in her 2008 presidential campaign. Her loss to Fernando Luca, marked the end of 61 years of Colorado government.
