New York state has 31 electoral votes. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama held a steady lead over republican John McCain throughout the campaign season. At the start of election, Obama was in the lead with 60.5% compared to McCain's 35.1%.1 New York is generally a democratic state, having voted for a democrat in 7 of the 10 past elections.2 It kept up with tradition and elected Barack Obama as president.
