New Super Mario Bros Walkthrough
Guide written by Mitchell S
New Super Mario Bros. from GamesPress
Introduction
The goal of this walkthrough is to help the reader complete each of the eighty levels of New Super Mario Bros. It will also point out hidden shortcuts, locations of all the Star Coins, and will point out general tips to help the reader get through some of the tougher areas of the game.
Controls and Mechanics
- The controls in New Super Mario Brothers are very simple, but require a great deal of finesse in order to truly master.
- Running and Momentum: Holding down the Y button will cause Mario to run. While running, you must take note that momentum is a huge aspect of NSMB. Mario cannot stop on a dime and when he jumps, he takes all of his forward momentum with him. What does this mean? It means that if you're running full speed and you try to jump on a small platform, you need to either jump immediately to the next platform or ground pound on the platform to kill your momentum, otherwise you will slide right off. Take your time with tricky platforming sections and don't rush through them.
- Jumping: Pressing the B or A buttons will cause Mario to jump. The longer you hold down the button, the higher he will jump.
- Ground Pound: Press B + Down on the D-Pad to execute a ground pound or butt stomp. Ground pounds are useful for dealing extra damage to enemies as opposed to just jumping on them, breaking through brick blocks, hitting ? Blocks from a different direction and breaking your momentum on a jump.
- Wall Jumps: When jumping against a wall, hold the D-Pad in the direction of the wall and then press A or B to perform a wall jump. This is an invaluable skill that takes a little getting used to, so practice it a bit until you feel more comfortable.
- Crouch Slide: There are times when if you are bigger than small Mario (Mario without a Mushroom,) you will have you use the crouch slide to make it through certain openings. To do so, simply get a running start and crouch to let your momentum take you through the gap.
Power Ups
- The power-up system in NSMB works like this: If you have nothing, a power-up block will give you a Mushroom; if you have a Mushroom, the block will give you a Fire Flower; and if you have a Fire Flower, the block will just give you another Fire Flower. Blue Shells, Tiny Mushrooms, Mega Mushrooms and Stars must be obtained from specific blocks.
- Mushroom: Obtaining a mushroom will cause Mario to grow to his regular size. If you get hit, you'll shrink down to small Mario.
- Fire Flower: Grabbing a Fire Flower will immediately make Mario bigger and will give Mario the ability to shoot fireballs. Press X or Y to shoot fire balls, but note that there cannot be more than two fireballs on screen at a time. If you get hit as Fiery Mario, you will remain as big Mario, but you will lose you fire power.
- Blue Shell: The blue shell will allow Mario to slide across the ground like a Koopa shell, breaking blocks and killing any enemy he runs into. To slide you can either run at high speed to automatically start sliding, or press down while running. To stop sliding, let go of the Y or X button. Be careful when using the Blue Shell as bumping in to a wall will cause you to reverse direction.
- Giant Mushroom: Grabbing a Giant Mushroom will, as you can probably guess, cause Mario to grow into a giant. While in this mode, Mario can run through enemies, pipes, blocks, and is impervious to any attack. The more destruction you cause, the more the meter at the top fills up and the more extra lives you receive once the power-up wears off.
- Tiny Mushroom: Tiny Mushrooms will cause Mario to shrink into Mini Mario. While in this form, Mario is faster, can jump higher and farther, can run on the surface of water, and most importantly, can enter through small openings and pipes that no other version of Mario can enter. The down side is that he can be killed with just one hit. Collecting any power-up (except the Star) will end this mode.
- Star: The Star will grant Mario temporary invulnerability in addition to giving him a spiffy little flip when he jumps.
Star Coins
- Star Coins essentially act as the game's currency. Every level contains three Star Coins. If you collect a Star Coin and you die, you must get the Star Coin again and beat the level to actually obtain the coin.
- These coins are used to unlock gates that let you travel to new levels or to one of the various shops.
Walkthrough
World 1
World 1-1
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 1 - Introduction & World 1-1 (Time: 3:02)
- At the start of the level, proceed to the right and bump the three ? Blocks for some coins and a mushroom.
- Continue onwards, jump on the three brick blocks, and repeatedly hit the lone block at the top for a bunch of coins.
- As you proceed forward, smashing Goombas and jumping over pit falls, you'll find a lone ? Block that will contain a Giant Mushroom. Grab it to grow super huge and steamroll everything in your path. Be sure to get the first Star Coin’’’ that will be floating in the air.
- Be wary not to destroy the pipe after checkpoint while you're huge. Once you return to normal size, head back to that pipe and press down to enter a secret area.
- At the end of this secret area will be the second Star Coin.
- The third Star Coin will be stuck under three brick blocks that can be broken by use of a ground pound (B + Down).
- Continue heading right, jump up the block stairs and leap towards the flagpole to end the first level.
World 1-2
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 2 - World 1-2 (Time: 5:26)
- The first ? Block here will contain a power up.
- If you want some extra coins, butt stomp through all of the blue brick blocks. One the last two blocks, hold down to crash through all of the blocks below to reach a hidden area with a lot of coins. Jump on the trampoline to exit.
- Jump on the blocks to reach the platform with the first Star Coin.
- The next ? contains a power up.
- Continue forward until you reach a Star Coin that is encased in a cage of blue blocks. Butt stomp through the top to claim your second coin.
- Go across the see-saw platform and jump on the middle four blue blocks to pound the top block and receive a bunch of coins and a mushroom.
- The next ? Block to your right contains a power up.
- Continue onwards, avoiding or setting ablaze the piranha plants that come out of the pipes.
- Jump on the ceiling to bypass some platforming segments until you reach another seesaw platform.
- Branching Path: If you use the seesaw to jump on to the ceiling, you will find another pipe along with the final Star Coin. Going this way will allow you to bypass World 1-3, enter an item shop and skip right to World 1 Tower.
- Continue to the right until you reach a pipe that will lead you to the end of level flagpole.
World 1-3
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 3 - World 1-3 (Time: 1:50)
- The mushroom platforms here sway, so be wary of your momentum as you make your jumps.
- The first ? Block here will grant you a power up.
- You'll eventually find a spring that will cause you Mario to spin as he flies upwards and glides back down. Use it to reach a high green mushroom where you'll find another spring.
- Jump on the spring to reach a bouncy pink mushroom platform. Position yourself above the platform and press Down while spinning to cause Mario to come spiraling down. This will allow him to bounce up high enough to reach the first Star Coin
- Don’t stop spinning yet. Continue to the right while gliding to find a trail of coins that will lead you to the second Star Coin.
- The ? Block below the red mushroom platform will contain a power up.
- Jump across the string of red mushrooms, making sure to grab the final Star Coin.
- Jump through the red ring to trigger 8 red coins to appear. If you manage to grab all eight, an extra life will fall down from the sky. Make sure that you're not over a pit when the life falls.
- Jump to the last red mushroom and wait until it tilts to the left to run and jump on to the flagpole to try and get an extra life by touching the top.
World 1-Tower
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 4 - World 1-Small Castle (Time: 5:32)
- As any seasoned Mario vet knows, the Dry Bones you encounter here will fall apart when you jump on them, only to reassemble a couple of seconds later. Fireballs are ineffective as well, so you're best off just jumping on them and then ignoring their presence.
- The left ? Block will contain a power up and the right block holds a coin.
- Wait for the two gray blocks to separate and jump on to the block on the left.
- When the blocks above you pull apart jump on the block to the right.
- Jump on the right block for the next one.
- Jump on the left block for the next one.
- Finally jump on to the right block and then on to the blue platform.
- Jump up and proceed across the blocks when it's safe. Mario doesn't want to get smashed.
- Jump up again and wait until the top block comes down once. Run across when the smaller blocks go down.
- Jump up, knock out the Dry Bones, grab the power up from the ? Block and get the first Star Coin. Jump on it and then on to the next gray platform. From here, use your blue shell's ability to slide across the floor and break the blocks. Eventually you'll wind up at a secret end flagpole that will unlock the route to the World 5 warp cannon.
- Exit the room and jump on to the blue platform where the spiked blocks are.
- Jump on to the gray blocks as they protrude from the right to head upwards on to the next blue platform.
- Wait until all of the gray blocks separate, and then jump on to the next blue platform. When the gray blocks start to come together, jump to land on top of them. Use this method to reach the top and nab the last Star Coin.
- When you reach the green pipe, wait until the gray blocks separate before going into the pipe. The pipe will shoot you upwards and you will land on top of the blue platform.
- Before you enter the boss door, grab the power-up from the ? Block to your right.
- Enter the door to face the first boss.
Boss #1 - Koopa Jr.
- All this boss does is run back and forth. There are no surprises here.
- If you have a fire flower, simply force-feed him fireballs until he croaks.
- If you don't, just keep jumping on his head. As long as he doesn't run into you, you should be fine.
World 1-4
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 5 - World 1-4 (Time: 3:54)
- Butt Stomp the slope to slide down and take out all of the Goombas on the way.
- There will be a Koopa at the top of the next hill. Jump on him and kick his shell to the right to hit a ? Block with a power up. Be sure to avoid it on the way back.
- The ? Block at the bottom next to the green pipe contains a tiny mushroom. Use it to enter the small pipe to the left.
- Run across the water to get all of the coins then wall jump to reach the platform with the first Star Coin. Run back to collect more coins, then exit through the big pipe.
- Continue to the right until you reach three ? Blocks. The middle block contains a mushroom that will turn you back to normal size, but we don't want to grow yet. Continue all the way to the right until you reach a downward slope. Run down the slope, across the small gap, into a secret area where you can claim another Star Coin.
- Now hit the lone ? Block that you passed before to get a mushroom. Back track to the area with all of the brown brick blocks. At the bottom left of this structure there is a green pipe whose entrance is block by a block. Butt Stomp the block and enter the pipe.
- Don't grab the coins here yet. Head to the right and hit the last blue block to cause a P-Switch to appear. Hit the switch to cause all the coins to turn into blocks. Jump across the blocks to reach the third and final Star Coin.
- Now head back to the right until you reach the end flagpole.
World 1-5
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 6 - World 1-5 (Time: 3:14)
- TIP: This level is all about the bouncy mushroom platforms. Press B right as you hit the platform to jump higher.
- Hit the ? Blocks here to find a coins and a power up.
- Use the above tip to reach the first Star Coin in plain sight.
- Jump on the red Koopa and throw his shell to the right to take out all of his friends wandering around on the pink platforms.
- Bounce your way to the right until you come across a pulley platform. Get used to these, as you'll be seeing them a lot in the future. When you stay on one side, it gets weighed down and causes the other side to rise. Stay on one side too long and it will fall.
- Pick up the second Star Coin on the tall red mushroom platform.
- On the third pulley platform, stay on the left platform for a little to let the right platform rise up enough so that you can enter the green pipe at the top.
- In this area, you can either ride the moving mushroom, or you can bounce across the bottom and collect all the coins you can. Whichever way you choose, your main goal is to snag the final Star Coin in the midst of a pattern of coins that form a mushroom. At the end of the section, fall down the pit to return to the main level.
- Continue to the right once you fall down to find a red coin ring. Once again, collect the eight red coins for a 1-Up mushroom.
- Bounce along to the right until you reach flagpole.
World 1-A
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 43 - World 1-A (Time: 3:21)
- NOTE: This level is unlocked by going to the intersection after world 1-4 and paying 5 Star Coins to remove the sign below.
- Enter the pipe to start off the level.
- Hit the first ? Block for a power-up.
- Continue to the right, but stay in the middle of the screen as the stage scrolls so you can see what's coming up ahead.
- The sharks here swim in straight lines, so you should be able to easily avoid them just by staying out of their way.
- Hit the upcoming P-Switch for some extra coinage. It's not necessary though.
- After you make your way through the bouncy blobs, swim upwards and stay close to the ceiling to get the first Star Coin. If you wait too long, invisible blocks will make the coin much harder to obtain.
- Enter the next green pipe for the next Star Coin. Exit through the pipe on the right.
- Continue to the right and hit the power-up block for whatever power-up you desire.
- Be careful in this next section as the pipes have a tendency to blow you into a shark. Don’t go over the pipes if you see incoming sharks.
- The next P-Switch will again give you a chance to rake in some coins for an extra life
- The final Star Coin will be on a small platform near the ceiling. If you're small Mario, you can simply swim through the opening on the left. Otherwise, you have to go around.
- Just a little further to the right and you'll reach the pipe that will end the level.
World 1-Castle
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 7 - World 1-Small Castle (Time: 2:28)
- Walk along the tightrope and then jump on to the next platform, making sure to avoid the fireball that jumps out of the lava.
- Continue to the right until you reach a gray block that sinks and rises from the lava. Don't worry; it won't go all the way down. Hit the block for a power up.
- Once you reach solid ground, stomp on the dry bones and wait until the spiked ceiling starts to rise.
- The ? Block just has a coin, so run past it, the next brick block and stop at the next break to wait for the ceiling to rise again.
- Stop at the next break, wait for the ceiling to fall and then wall jump to reach the first Star Coin.
- Once the ceiling rises again run to the right to return to more lava. Hit the ? Block here for a power up.
- As you continue to the right, you'll spot another Star Coin just above the lava. Wait a little and you'll find a small gray platform rise out of the lava, allowing you to safely jump on it and obtain the coin. Jump off immediately because this one actually will sink down into the lava.
- Proceed onwards, but pause when you reach the second tight rope. Go to the middle of the rope and jump as high as you can. You should see a hidden green pipe. Get yourself into the pipe to find the final Star Coin for this level.
- Continue across the two sinking platforms to reach the boss door.
World 1 Boss - Bowser
- Whoa there, it's like we're skipping to the main event already. Well whatever the case, Bowser is a piece of cake. There are three ways to win this, each of them easy.
- If you have a fire flower, you can give him a taste of his own medicine and simply plug him full of fireballs while avoiding his own.
- Otherwise you can jump on the elevator platform to jump over him and hit the red switch to destroy the bridge.
- Or you can run under him when he jumps and hit the switch that way.
- Once he's dead, Bowser Jr. will run off with Peach and you will give chase.
World 2
World 2-1
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 8 - World 2-1 (Time: 3:53)
- The second ? Block to your right contains a power-up. If it is a fire flower, use your fireballs to take out the Pokey that is blocking your way. Otherwise, jump over it by jumping on top of the ? Blocks.
- You'll soon be confronted by another Pokey. This time, hit the smiley block three times to create a column of blocks tall enough so that you can jump over the Pokey.
- You'll find your first Star Coin in between two normal coins. Jump to get it, but be careful not to bump into the Pokey.
- Jump on the rising platform and jump over the next Pokey once the platform reaches its peak.
- The next two Pokies will be on its own rising platform. When the platforms sink to their lowest, jump across.
- Grab the next Star Coin but be careful not to fall into the pit or hit the rising and falling Pokey on the platform.
- Jump over the next tall Pokey to reach the halfway marker. There will be a ? Block with a power up nearby which should give you a fire flower if you haven't gotten hit since the beginning of the level.
- The next couple of sections of the level simply consist of jumping from platform to platform while avoid the Pokies who could potential be transported by the moving platform at the bottom.
- Be sure to grab the last Star Coin on one of the low platforms.
- TIP: You probably noticed a tiny pipe at the end of the section. The only thing you'll find here is a little maze with a bunch of coins. It isn't worth going through the trouble of getting a tiny mushroom if you don't already have it.
- The next part can be a little tricky without a fire flower. What you have to do is jump to the middle column of elevator platforms when the platform with the Pokey is at its lowest so that you can jump over it. Once you clear it, enter the pipe.
- The middle brick block here has a P switch. Jump on it to make the coins change into bricks, which you can jump on to avoid the Pokey and reach the top of the end of level flagpole.
World 2-2
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 9 - World 2-2 (Time: 3:03)
- Grab the power-up from the ? block in front of you.
- Our favorite cloud riding baddie, Lakitu, makes his debut in this level. He will float around above and toss down Spinies to make your life very miserable. If you can hit him with a fireball or Koopa shell, you can actually kill the Lakitu and leave the cloud behind for you to ride. Jumping on him will make both the Lakitu and the cloud disappear.
- If you can, try to get Lakitu out of his cloud and ride it low and to the right until you see the orange platforms. There should be a trail of coins leading upwards that will bring you to the first Star Coin.
- Return down to the ground level and continue on. Be wary of the piranha plant in the green pipe.
- You should see the next Star Coin below a group of brick blocks. Ground pound through them to collect your prize.
- As you continue you'll find another piranha waiting for you in the red pipe.
- The ? Blocks in this next area all contain coins, so you can ignore them if you wish.
- The lone ? Block after that though will contain a power up.
- When you reach two pipes, one yellow and one green, enter the green pipe and hold up. The pipe will shoot you upwards into another pipe.
- In this area, enter both green pipes to be shot up into the final Star Coin of the level, as well as plenty of regular coins. Exit through the rightmost pipe when you're done.
- All that’s left is to run across the mushroom and jump on the flagpole.
World 2-3
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 10 - World 2-3 (Time: 4:49)
- Enter the pipe and hold down to slide through all of the Koopas in the way.
- Head to the right, but before jumping down, wall jump to reach the platform above and the first Star Coin.
- Jump down through the manhole and enter the door. The ? Block here will contain a power-up.
- If you want some extra coins, jump down through the door pointing down. Otherwise, go past it and jump down the manhole.
- The ? Blocks above just contain two coins, so just ignore them and continue going forward.
- Slow down before you reach the door or you'll run right into the piranha plant. Once you go through jump on the left platform and take it around to get the second Star Coin.
- Head down to the bottom and continue right to enter another pipe.
- Proceed to the right, down the slide, and then right again across the shallow water.
- Hit the ? Switch to raise the water. Swim upwards and head into the opening in the ceiling to find an area with lots of coins to collect. Be fast or the water level will sink, causing you to hit the switch again.
- Branching Path: In this area with the bunch of coins, there is another ? Switch on the ceiling. Hitting it will cause the water level to rise again and will take you to another opening on the right. Going through this opening will take you to a separate end of level flagpole that will unlock World 2-A.
- After collecting all of the coins in the ceiling opening, hit the switch again to swim into the opening on the right with the arrow.
- Jump over or kill the huge piranha with fireballs and continue all the way right to find two ? Blocks. The one on the right will contain a power-up.
- Go back and head up the slope. Go left when you reach the top. Jump up on the platform to find two different tunnels. Take the right tunnel and jump to the top of the platform. Get a running start and jump to the right to land on another platform that holds the final Star Coin.
- Jump down and head to the right. Jump all the way up through the manhole. If you need a power-up head left, otherwise go right.
- Hit the red ! Switch to create a bridge of red blocks that will take you over the piranha plant and through the pipe.
- Move the spring to the edge of the pipe and jump up to unveil a hidden block. Jump onto that block to give you the height you need to jump to the top of the flagpole and nab a 1-Up.
World 2-4
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 11 - World 2-4 (Time: 4:48)
- The ? Switches in this level will cause the ground to rise, allowing you to hit the three ? Blocks up above. The middle block contains a power-up.
- Continue to the right until you see the first Star Coin being guarded by a Piranha Plant. Go under the pipe and wait for the plant to recede into its home. Then jump onto the pipe and grab the coin.
- With the coin in hand, proceed onwards. You'll run into a descending stairway of platforms that are each guarded by piranhas. If you have a fire flower, simply toast the plants as they pop out. Otherwise, just wait for the right timing.
- When you reach the water at the bottom, swim to the right, go past the P Block, and swim through the small passage at the bottom to reach two pipes. The red one has a piranha and the green one will take you to a secret area.
- Avoid the Cheep-Cheeps and make your way to the other side of the pool to enter another pipe.
- Before you hit the ? Switch and run all the way to the left to get the next Star Coin.
- Hit the switch and jump on to the bridge above.
- Continue onwards until you see a brick block and a ? Block next to each other. The ? Block has a power-up and the brick block has a ? Switch. Hit the switch and jump to the right when on top of the mound to reach the platform on the right.
- Be careful in this next part. Two Hammer Brothers occupy the two rows of blocks and can quickly put a stop to you if you rush into them. If you have a fire flower, take them out from a distance. Otherwise, try to run under them and hit the block they're standing on to knock them out. Don't forget to grab the last Star Coin once they're eliminated.
- Proceed a little further to the right to finish the level.
World 2-Tower
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 12 - World 2-Small Castle (Time: 4:17)
- Proceed across the windmill platforms. There will be a power-up at the top of the second windmill in the middle ? Block.
- Jump on top of the ? Blocks to reach the third windmill platform. Ride it until it reaches the left side and then jump to the left when the next platform becomes visible.
- Continue across the rope, collecting all of the coins along the way.
- Jump onto the next windmill and ride it to the top until you can reach the rope. Shimmy along to the right until you reach the next windmill. Fall all the way down to the floor and run to the right to find the first Star Coin.
- Now go back to the rope and head left this time. Get back on the first windmill and this time jump to the small platform on the left.
- Wall jump up to reach a door that will take you to a secret room.
- Continuously wall jump inside of the golden inverted U as it starts moving. When it reaches the platform on the right, fall down, and quickly ascend the platforms on the right so that you can jump on top of the golden blocks.
- Once on top, jump to get the second Star Coin and land on the next platform. Do more continuous wall jumps in the next contraption to ride it up to another door.
- Hit the red block to cause a bunch of rotating shape platforms to appear. Jump across to the second red square, but don't enter the pipe yet. Instead, wall jump between the wall and the pipe to hit another red block.
- This will cause more shapes to appear to the left. Jump across them to reach the third and final Star Coin.
- Now you can enter the red pipe, which will take you straight to the boss door.
Boss: Koopa Jr. 2
- This is basically the same as the previous fight except now Koopa Jr will hide in his shell after you jump on him, preventing you from hitting him again until he comes out.
- If you have a fire flower, you can once again just hit him with fireballs until he dies.
- Three jumps, nine fireballs, or a combination of the two will put him down for the count.
World 2-5
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 13 - World 2-5 (Time: 4:58)
- You'll be introduced to Blockhoppers in this level. These little buggers disguise themselves (rather poorly) as ? Blocks and attempt to jump on you whenever you get close. You can identify them by the fact that their question mark doesn't move. In this level, you'll use these guys to reach hard to reach places by jumping on them when they're about to jump. If you listen closely to the music you can tell when they're about to jump. They always jump when they make that little "wah" sound.
- The third ? Block from the start contains a power-up.
- You'll run into your first group of Blockhoppers, try to lure the big one close to the bunch of brick blocks. When it jumps, jump off towards the trail of coins to collect your first Star Coin.
- Continue to the right, stomping on all of the Blockhoppers along the way until you reach the halfway point.
- Hit the ? Block for a power-up.
- Don't collect the coins yet as you continue onwards. When you see three brick blocks together, hit the middle block to make a P Switch emerge. Hit the switch to turn all of the coins into blocks, allowing you to jump across them and collect the second Star Coin.
- Head to the right, but be wary of the Boomerang Bro. Take him out fast as once he gets two boomerangs going at once, it becomes difficult to approach him.
- Instead of going into the pipe, jump into the quick sand via the opening on the right. Hold right and keep jumping until you end up on top of the platform at the bottom right. Head into the opening.
- Go all the way down and jump on to the Blockhopper to reach the third Star Coin for the level.
- Once you've got the coin, jump back up to the surface, head to the right, and use the Blockhopper to reach the top of the flagpole and end the level.
World 2-6
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 14 - World 2-6 (Time: 6:19)
- Head to the right and into the red pipe to truly kick this level off.
- The screen will constantly be scrolling so be sure not to fall behind.
- Your biggest threats in this level are the piranha plants. If you have a fire flower, just send a fireball their way to neutralize them.
- The first two piranhas you pass by are harmless unless you go out of your way to jump into them.
- The two after however will land on your platform if you do not take them out with a fireball.
- Duck under the green pipe to avoid getting hit by the piranha inside.
- Collect the first Star Coin by using the elevator platform to give you the extra height you need to snag it.
- The third ? Block here will contain a power-up.
- In the next group of ? Blocks, the third one will grant you a 1-Up mushroom. Don't kill yourself trying to get it though, as that would defeat the purpose.
- More piranhas will be coming your way, so get rid of them with more fireballs.
- When a second large platform appears, jump on it to get it to start moving.
- Just hang tight on this platform continuing to get rid of piranhas as they pop up and eventually the platform will slowly start to drift off screen. When elevator platforms start appearing, jump on them until you make it all the way to solid land.
- You'll see what looks like a spring next to a pipe with a piranha. Ground pound the spring a couple of times to blow out the piranha, allowing you to head down the pipe.
- Jump across the platforms to reach the end of the level.
World 2-A
- NOTE: This level is unlocked by going through the branching path in World 2-3
- The Spike Bass in the waters below will periodically jump out and try to eat poor Mario. You can tell when he's about to jump by when he dips down.
- Hit the first ? Block for a power-up and then continue heading right.
- When you see a log above and a log below, take the lower log to reach the first Star Coin.
- Continue to the right and you'll find a long section with lots of springs and lots of coins.
- Use the springs to avoid having to deal with the Spike Bass as you work your way towards the right.
- Near the end, you'll come across the second Star Coin below a platform. Use the spring to launch up and avoid landing on the platforms to glide into the coin.
- Branching Path: This is trick, but while your still spinning from getting the second Star Coin, veer to the right and try to land on the Koopa as it's on the right side of the platform to bounce off and wind up in the small niche above. Enter the pipe to find the third Star Coin and an alternate exit.
- Enter the pipe on the right, jump on the spring and work your way to the right to find the end of the level.
World 2-Castle
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 15 - World 2-Big Castle (Time: 4:17)
- When the level begins, wait for the spiked ball to fall into the pit. Then proceed to the right.
- The second ? Block you come across will contain a power-up.
- Jump over the spiked balls as you continue to the right. When you reach the rope, Tarzan-swing over the gap to avoid getting hit by the giant spiked ball.
- When reach another group of three ? Blocks, the middle block will contain a power-up.
- Run into the tunnel, fall into the small hole, and crouch to avoid getting hit by the spiked ball. When it passes get up, run to the next one, and crouch again. When that one passes, run to the next area and jump onto the blocks to avoid the spiked ball.
- Wall jump up to the top platform and run for the hole that leads to the first Star Coin.
- Jump down and continue to the right, across the gap, over the spiked ball, and through the door.
- Head to the right, jump over the first canon, and duck to avoid the Bullet Bill fired by the second one.
- Jump onto the third canon and wait for a Bullet Bill to come near you. Use the Bullet Bill as a boost to get up to the platform that holds the second Star Coin.
- Head up the stairs and duck under the Bullet Bills that fly your way.
- Hit the ? Switch to cause the land to sink. Jump down and avoid the rolling spiked ball as you head across.
- The next ? Block here contains a power-up.
- Use the rope to jump over the big spiked ball and onto a platform with two ? Blocks. The right-most block contains a tiny Mushroom. Collect it and then continue on.
- Use your tiny size to enter the tunnel that leads to the third Star Coin.
- Shortcut: If you want skip to World 4, ignore the next step. You're going to need to defeat the boss with the Tiny Mushroom still active.
- Hit the ? Block to get a mushroom and return to normal size.
- Continue to the right, over the stationary spike ball, and hit the switch to lower the land and reveal the Boss Door. Without getting hit by the now rolling spiked ball, enter the door.
Boss - Mummified Pokey
- Mummy Pokey has two main ways of attack. The first is to shoot rocks at you. They move fairly slow and can be avoided by simply jumping over them.
- The second method is actually the one that leaves him the most vulnerable. He will disappear underground and then pop up in a random location. He telegraphs where he's about to emerge by kicking up a bunch of dust before he pops out.
- As far as defeating him goes, it's simply a matter of jumping on his head when he's about to emerge. If you have a fire flower, it'll take nine fireballs to put him down. If you have a blue shell, it'll take three hits with your sliding attack.
- Note: If you're trying to beat him with the Tiny Mushroom, you'll need to ground pound his head instead of just jumping on it.
World 3
World 3-1
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 16 - World 3-1 (Time: 2:48)
- Welcome to your first underwater level. Jump in the green pipe to get started.
- Lets start by going over the different kinds of Cheep Cheeps. The orange fishes are passive and will just swim along a straight line. As long as you don't touch them, they won't be a problem. The Purple Cheep Cheeps on the other hand will lock on to you and charge towards you. If they eat you, it's an instant death, so avoid at all costs. All Cheep Cheeps will go down with one fireball, which makes the fire flower invaluable for this level.
- With that out of the way, proceed to the right, avoiding all of the fishes along the way.
- Swim through the red ring to cause the eight red coins to appear. Collect them all for a power-up.
- Once you get to the halfway marker, you'll find a new block that gives you a power-up depending on when you hit it. Aim for a fire flower if you don’t already have one.
- Continue to the right and you'll run into your first purple Cheep Cheep. Remember, avoid its charge at all costs.
- When you see three pipes side by side, go into the middle green one. Collect all the coins you want in here, but make sure to grab the first Star Coin above all else.
- When you return to the main level, you'll find the second Star Coin between two pipes that are blowing air downwards.
- Swim a little further to the right and you'll see a P Switch and a bunch of brick blocks. Hit the switch, but ignore the nearby coins and swim to the right. You'll see the third Star Coin surrounded by a bunch of normal coins. Get it before the coins turn back into blocks.
- Continue onwards and you'll find another red ring for more red coins.
- After collecting the red coins, go just a little further to the right to reach a pipe that will bring you back to the surface.
- Jump on the blocks to get the height and momentum you need to reach the top of the flagpole.
World 3-2
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 17 - World 3-2 (Time: 6:24)
- The first ? Block you see will contain a power-up.
- Go across the three seesaw mushroom platforms, but be wary as there are plenty of Goombas and Koopas along the way.
- Go across the pulley platforms to reach the midpoint of the level. Enter the nearby yellow pipe.
- Inside here you'll find the first Star Coin along with a bunch of regular coins. Grab what you need, then exit through the pipe on the right side.
- When you return to the main level, go left and hit the ? Blocks to find a power-up.
- Jump across the two pulley platforms, but be sure to be quick when you jump off the second one so you still have the height you need to get the second Star Coin on the high platform.
- Jump on the mushroom platform to cause it to start moving. There is a branching path coming up. If you want to bypass it, skip to number 12 of this guide.
- Branching Path: There are three pipes above you. The only one that will take you to a secret area is the green one, so make your way into it.
- Hit the P Switch, then quickly jump on the spring, and jump off to fly into the air to try and collect as many coins as you can. When you reach the peak of your jump, press down to quickly come down and try again. You'll only have enough time for about two jumps so make them count. When you're done, exit through the pipe on the right.
- Jump across all of the seesaw mushrooms here to reach the secondary end of level flagpole and unlock World 3-B.
- End Branching Path
- Be careful on this seesaw mushroom, it tilts very wildly towards the end. Once it reaches the other side, quickly jump off.
- In this next section there is a red ring that will cause the eight red coins to appear. Collect the first four by simply jumping from platform to platform. Coins five and six must be collected by waiting on the last platform until it falls, and then quickly jumping off as soon as you get the coins.
- Jump on to the next moving mushroom platform. The last Star Coin is suspended high above in plain sight. Be careful when trying to get it because like the last one, this mushroom moves very wildly and can easily shift your momentum to make you run off the platform when you land.
- Once the platform reaches the other side you'll be able to end the level.
World 3-Tower
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 18 - World 3-Small Castle (Time: 3:29)
- Jump in the middle pipe to be shot upwards towards the fences. Don't grab on to the highest fence yet though. Fall back down and grab on to the fence closest to the ground.
- TIP: First let's go over the mechanics of climbing on these fences. Pressing the Y button will cause Mario to punch the fence. If used on an enemy on the opposite side of the fence as Mario, the enemy will be knocked off the fence. If used on a special square or rectangle with hinges on the fence, it will cause Mario to switch to the other side of the fence. When dealing with Koopas on the same side of the fence as him, Mario can move downwards on to their head to knock them off that way.
- Move to the left after you grab on to the fence and jump to the fence above. Take this fence all the way up and jump on to the platform on the right. Your first Star Coin will be within reach.
- Jump back down and re-enter the middle pipe. This time grab on to the highest fence.
- Jump up the first two fences and then position yourself in the large rectangle in the middle. Punch the rectangle to be moved to the other side of the Amps. Climb up and jump through the hole at the top on to the next platform.
- Jump on to the fence and jump through the two brick blocks at the top.
- Work your way up and jump through the next set of blocks to another big fence. Punch the rectangle to move to the other side.
- Ground pound the blocks and jump on the fence to your left to get the second Star Coin.
- Go back to the right and return to the big fence you just came from. Instead of punching the rectangle, go all the way up, jump through the blocks and enter the door.
- Hit the red ! Switch and quickly work your way up to the top. If you're fast enough you'll be able to reach the third Star Coin and the door leading out of this room.
- Jump up to the fence above and hit the ? Block on the right to get a power-up. Run to the left and enter the Boss Doors.
Boss - Koopa Jr. 3
- This guy sure doesn't evolve very much. He's still basically the same as he was the last two times.
- He moves a little bit faster, but it still shouldn't be anything you can't handle.
- Just to recap; 9 fireballs, 3 jumps on the head, two buttstomps, or a combination of the three will take him out.
- If he tries to jump on you, quickly run to the left or right.
- After you jump on him he'll hide in his shell. This is so you can't jump on him twice in a row.
World 3-3
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 19 - World 3-3 (Time: 4:22)
- Head into the green pipe to dive into your next underwater level.
- This time the main enemies are Bloopers. They are much more aggressive than Cheep Cheeps, but can only move in short bursts diagonally and upwards. They go down with one fireball, so as always, a fire flower is a highly recommended power-up for this level.
- Follow the arrow to the right and hit the first ? Block you see for a power-up.
- Keep swimming to the right until you see a yellow pipe. Head down all the way and look to your left for the first Star Coin.
- To your right is a ? Switch that will turn off the air jets from the pipes. Hit it and quickly swim upwards and to the right. When you see the green and yellow pipes on top of each other, head down.
- There will be a red ring here for another chance to collect 8 red coins. After you do so, move to the right.
- Enter the third pipe from the left.
- This is a very large secret area, but your main destination is the bottom right where you'll find your second Star Coin. There is also a power-up block that is guarded by many bloopers. Once you've gotten what you came for, exit through the pipe at the top right.
- Follow the arrows and swim up and to the right. Eventually you'll come across a pipe at the top and several pipes at the bottom blowing bubbles. Swim down all the way and you'll find your last Star Coin. Immediately after you touch it, Bloopers will ambush you so quickly swim back up to avoid them.
- Enter the pipe at the top to return to land and end the level.
World 3-Ghost House
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 20 - World 3-Ghost House (Time: 7:20)
- Welcome to your first ghost house. As you probably guessed, this will be your first time dealing with Boos. As any Mario vet knows, when you're facing a Boo, they freeze in place and when you're facing away from a Boo, they will home in on you to attack. Boos cannot be killed by anything but a sliding Blue Shell Mario or a Star. Use this knowledge to position Boos so that they don't get in your way.
- Hit the first ? Block for a power-up, but know that instead of just emerging from the block, it will be thrown.
- Run to the right and hit the ? Switch to cause stairs to appear.
- Run up the stairs and down the other side.
- Ignore the Boos and enter the first door you see. There will be a power-up in the left block and a Boo in the right. Exit through the same door you entered from.
- Continue to the right until you see another door under a staircase.
- Enter the door to find a room full of enemy pumpkins. Jump on them once to crack their shell and cause them to run around much faster. Jump on them twice to kill them. Anyway, your second Star Coin is suspended high in this room. Jump on a pumpkin to grab it and then leave.
- When the elevator platform comes down, hit the ? Switch and use the platform to jump on the newly formed stairs. Head up about halfway and then jump to the left staircase. Follow those stairs up to find the second Star Coin.
- Jump down and hit the ? Switch again, but this time take the stairs all the way up.
- Jump over the gap and go down the slope. Hit the brick block to unveil a ? Switch.
- Branching Path: To unlock the path to the warp canon for this world, hit the ? Switch, then quickly ascend the stairs, jump over the gap, down the slope you came up earlier and into the door to the left of the one you entered to collect the first Star Coin. You'll find a separate end of level flagpole through that door.
- Hit the ? Switch, run up the stairs, drop down into the gap and enter the newly created door.
- Hit the nearby ? Block for another power-up.
- Jump up the platforms to your left to find a Power-up Block. You're going to need a Blue Shell, so try to time your jump accordingly. The blue shell should appear right after the star.
- Head to the right to find another ? Switch. Hit it and jump up the three flights of stairs.
- Before you go into the door, use your shell dash to break the blocks on the left side. You'll find the final Star Coin at the end of the tunnel.
- Enter the door and jump on the flagpole to end the level.
World 3-A
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 21 - World 3-A (Time: 5:04)
- Head to the right and jump on top of the barrel to grab a power-up from the ? Block.
- The new enemies you'll find in this level are the Skeeters. These guys skid along the surface of the water and drop bombs below.
- Work your way to the right until you reach an area where you see a bunch of dotted lines where blocks should be. Swim to the right and hit the red switch to cause red blocks to appear. Quickly swim back to the left and jump across the blocks to reach the ledge on the right.
- Head to the right to activate the halfway marker and hit the ? Blocks for coins and a power-up.
- Jump into the water and wait for the Skeeter above to destroy the blocks that cut you off from the first Star Coin. Once you get the coin, kill the Skeeter and proceed to the right.
- Between two barrels in the water will be a ? Block containing a Tiny Mushroom. Grab it and continue on.
- The second Star Coin will be a little bit further to the right suspended over a barrel. To get to it, jump on the Koopa and hold the jump button.
- Exit through the green pipe at the end to reach a new part of the level.
- Continue heading right and enter the first green pipe you see.
- Remember that you should have Mini Mario right now from the Tiny Mushroom you got earlier. Run across the water and jump, using the coins as a guide, to grab the final Star Coin. Exit through the pipe on the left.
- Just a little bit further to the right and you'll reach another pipe that will take you to the end of the level.
World 3-B
- This level might as well be known as Pipe and Piranha Heaven. Get a running start and jump over the first pipe when the Piranha retracts.
- Hit the two ? Blocks for a power-up and a coin, then continue heading to the right.
- If you have a fire flower, this level becomes much easier. Toast the Piranhas whenever they stick their head out.
- You won't be able to go into any of the pipes for a while, so don't even try.
- Once you get to a spot where there is a lone red pipe in between two green pipes with pits on both sides, enter it.
- Head to the left and enter the red pipe to get the first Star Coin. Head back down.
- Hit the power-up block for a power-up of your choosing and then return through the red pipe on the right.
- Continue heading right until you reach the last green pipe that stands above a horizontal yellow pipe below. Wall jump off the red pipe to the right and the green pipe to the left to land on the platform holding the next Star Coin.
- Hit the right ? Block for a power-up.
- Continue heading right, past the many piranhas and you'll eventually come across the third Star Coin in plain sight. Just jump to the green pipe below and snag it.
- A little further to the right and you'll find the end of level flagpole.
World 3-C
- Our good old friend the Spiked Bass is back. You don't have to worry too much about him though as you should be out of his range for the majority of the time he's around.
- Hit the first ? Block for a power-up.
- Continue across the log platforms until you see the first Star Coin. The small logs here will fall down when you stand on them, so take one down and pick up the coin quickly before the Spiked Bass comes around and tries to take a bite out of you.
- In the next section you'll be faced with some high flying Cheep-Cheeps that leap out of the water. They come out extremely fast so take your time in this next section.
- When you reach the halfway marker, hit the ? Block for a power-up.
- You'll see the next Star Coin stuck in between two platforms. To get it, just swim down and jump off the walls. If you have a fire flower, use it to rid yourself of the Spiked Bass first.
- This next part is a little tricky. Hit the P-Switch and immediately start running to the right, ignoring all ? Blocks and enemies. You need to do some quick platforming to ensure that you don't fall in the water. Your goal is to make it into the red pipe above a row of brick blocks before the blocks turn back into coins.
- If you make it, you'll appear on a falling log that will fall right on to the third Star Coin. You will also be right next to the end of the level.
World 3-Castle
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 22 - World 3-Big Castle (Time: 5:59)
- Once the giant spike retracts, run all the way to the ? Block and stop. Hit it for a power-up.
- Once the next spike retracts, run past it and the spike right after it but stop when you see the first Star Coin. Once the spike retracts, head down and grab the coin, but don't come up yet. Wait in the small little alcove where you'll be safe. Head back up and to the right once its safe.
- The donut blocks in this next area won't sustain your weight for very long, so quickly jump on them and to the other side once both spikes retract.
- After you get the halfway marker, hit the ? Block for another power-up.
- Time to meet our good friends the Thwomps. When you get close to these guys, they will fall forward in an attempt to flatten you like a pancake. Bait them by moving close and then moving away. Then jump on them and ground pound to defeat them.
- Defeat the first two Thwomps and then bait the third one to fall on the spikes, giving you a platform to help you across the spikes.
- Jump on to the pole and to the next platform. Head to the right until you reach a rope. Instead of jumping towards the big Thwomp, jump to the left. Wall jump off the right wall and run across the ceiling to the left. You'll eventually fall through the second Star Coin and on to the Thwomp guarding the spikes.
- Once again go up the pole and to the right, but this time jump to the right when you reach the rope. Try to get the Thwomp to fall before you jump by moving left and right while swinging on the rope.
- Jump past the next giant spike, hit the ? Block for a power-up, but wait before proceeding any further.
- If you're quick enough, you should be able to run past the next 5 spikes in one go.
- Jump down past the next spike to find the Boss Doors. Before heading in though, get a running start and slide under the blocks when the spike on the right retracts. Hide in the water hugging the wall on the left so you don't get hit when the spike comes down again. Once it retracts again, quickly jump on to the platform on the left and then jump to the platform on the right to grab the third Star Coin.
- When all is safe, return back through the way you came and enter the Boss Doors.
Boss - Cheepskipper
- This will probably be the hardest boss so far, but it still isn't very difficult. #This purple Cheep Cheep along with several small orange Cheep Cheeps will jump out of the water to try and hit you. The Cheepskipper himself will actually bounce along the bridge, giving you ample time to jump on him while he's exposed.
- Once again, three jumps on his head, two ground pounds, nine fireballs, or a combination of the three will be enough to take this boss down.
World 4
- Note: If you're coming off of World 3, you will actually be sent to world 5. World 4 is only unlocked by beating the boss of World 2 with a Tiny Mushroom.
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 23 - World 2-Big Castle Secret (Time: 4:35)
World 4-1
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 24 - World 4-1 (Time: 4:51)
- TIP: The purple water here is poisonous. It will kill you instantly if you touch it.
- The second ? Block here will have a power-up. The rest contain coins.
- The new enemy you'll face here are the Scuttlebugs. They're spiders that hang from webs and bob up and down. You can defeat them normally by jumping on top of them. Just don't touch their sides.
- Use the Koopa shells to take out the Scuttlebugs that block the way as you continue to the right.
- When you reach more ? Blocks, the last one on the bottom row will give you a power-up.
- Continue onwards until you see the first Star Coin. Jump on the Scuttlebug and hold down the jump button to reach it.
- On the next platform you'll see three brick blocks. Jump on top of the middle block and jump to hit a hidden block with a 1-Up.
- As you proceed further, you'll eventually come across Nessie, a friendly blue monster that will ferry you across the dangerous waters. If you butt stomp Nessie, she will tilt her head down and speed up.
- The first ? Block you come across while on Nessie will contain a power-up. If you need it, get it. If you don't, ignore it.
- The second Star Coin will appear overhead. This can be tricky, but when a Scuttlebug lowers itself, jump on it to grab the coin and make sure that you can land on Nessie as well.
- Shortcut: While riding Nessie, you'll find a row of five blocks with two ? Blocks on both ends. Jump on to these blocks by using a Scuttlebug to give you a boost, and then jump while on top of the third block to reveal a hidden vine that will take you up to a pipe. Enter the pipe and then jump across the three Scuttlebugs to find a hidden end of level flagpole. This will open a new path that lets you skip the next two levels in addition to getting access to a 1-Up store.
- After grabbing the second coin you can just butt stomp Nessie and duck down to avoid any Scuttlebugs until you reach solid ground.
- Continue to the right across the donut platforms and you'll eventually find the last Star Coin below a platform and between two Scuttlebugs. Get rid of the two spiders first and then jump against the platform that is above the coin and simply hold the direction that the coin is facing. You should slide against the wall and then on to the two donut platforms that the coin is resting on.
- Once you have the coin, continue to the right and jump on the Scuttlebug to reach the end of the level.
World 4-2
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 25 - World 4-2 (Time: 5:40)
- The right most ? Block will contain a power-up.
- The purple mushroom platforms here will tilt depending on which side your standing on. If you stand on one side for too long you will slide off the platform, so keep that in mind.
- Jump across the various platforms until you reach another ? Block. The brick block right beside it will contain a 1-Up mushroom.
- A little further to the right and you'll find the first Star Coin. Wall jump off the wall to the left of the coin to snag it and land on the red mushroom platform below.
- You'll reach the half-way marker and another ? Block with a power-up.
- Jump on top of the ? Block and then jump to the purple mushroom.
- The second purple mushroom platform will hold the second Star Coin. To grab it, wait on the right side of the second purple mushroom until it tilts down far enough for you to snag the coin.
- As you continue onwards you'll spot another red ring. Grab the eight red coins and claim your prize.
- When you come across solid ground again, take the steps to the top and jump to the purple mushroom on the right. Let the mushroom tilt a bit to the left before jumping off so you can make it on the platform on the left.
- Hit the brick block above to cause a vine to sprout and take you to a secret area.
- Jump on the clouds and hit the other brick block to cause another vine to emerge. Climb it to the top to reach the last Star Coin of the level. Exit through the pipe at the bottom.
- Not much else to do but continue heading to the right, jumping across all of the mushroom platforms in your path until you reach the end of level flagpole.
World 4-3
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 26 - World 4-3 (Time: 6:46)
- TIP: Another underwater level. This time the main enemies are eels. There are two types of Eels. Big eels will take up a whole half of the screen as they swim from right to left. Small eels hide in little holes and snap left and right trying to bite you when you get near. You can't kill either type, so just avoid them.
- Jump into the pipe and let's get started.
- The ? Block between the two brick blocks will contain a power-up.
- As you can see, this is a scrolling level, so don't get too far behind or you might find yourself sandwiched between the edge of the screen and a wall.
- After you get the power-up, stay on the lower end of the screen to avoid the large eel that is about to come chewing up everything on the top half.
- Once the eel is gone, stay close to the right side of the screen. The first Star Coin is going to show up soon and you'll need a lot of time in order to get it.
- As soon as you get the coin, immediately swim to the top half to avoid the next large eel.
- You can try to get the eight red coins if you want after going through the red rings, but they're placed very dangerously next to small eels. Don't kill yourself trying to get them.
- After you pass the halfway marker, grab the power-up from the ? Block and stay on the bottom half to avoid the next large eel.
- You're going to need to swim through the small opening between the large eel and the wall above the small eels.
- Between those two small eels is the second Star Coin. Very delicately swim down and then immediately swim back up to avoid being eel food.
- You'll soon see a ? Switch at the top of the screen. Wait a little bit before hitting it. Doing so will stop the air jets from the pipes which would blow you up into the large eel that's about to hog the top side of the screen. Once you hit it, swim close to the pipes and enter the second green pipe that is near the end.
- In this next room, swim left from where you entered and wait for the eels to snap to the left. Once they do, swim down and collect the third Star Coin. Exit the same way you came in.
- The next large eel will hog the bottom, so make your way to the top.
- Once the large eel passes, you'll soon come to an area with a bunch of coins in between two sets of small eels on both sides. This is tricky, but try to swim upwards directly in the middle of these coins.
- Once you get by that obstacle, you're home free. Enter the pipe, which will take you to solid ground, which will lead you to the end of the level. Just be careful of the Goomba that's on the steps.
World 4-Tower
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 27 - World 4-Small Castle (Time: 2:58)
- Use the sandwiching blocks as steps to climb to the top. The ? Block on the left holds a power-up. Enter the door.
- You're going to have to be fast here as the lava is quickly rising.
- Climb up the first long fence and jump to the right. Hit the right most ? Block for another power-up. Jump on the right most fence and keep going up.
- When you reach an area where you see a gray block that is moving up and down, hit the square on the fence to switch sides and then jump to the left.
- Go past the gray block and behind the fence to find the first Star Coin.
- Continue traveling upwards via jumping from fence to fence.
- When you go past the two sandwiching blocks, move to the right and jump between the two Amps to get the second Star Coin.
- Head left and continue heading up. The next ? Block you see will contain a power-up.
- When you reach the section with the Dry Bones and a bunch of sandwiching blocks, jump off the fence, jump on the Dry Bones, and jump on the platform to your right. Be sure to duck if the block is coming back to the right. Once it goes back, jump on the fence and keep heading up.
- Eventually you'll be able to jump on to the third block and get the third Star Coin.
- Jump on the fence to your left and continue heading upwards.
- You'll find a red coin ring here. If you miss one, don't go back to get it as you run the risk of the lava sneaking up on you.
- Finally you'll reach the top and the Boss Doors.
Boss - Koopa Jr. 4
- Hey would you look at that; he actually learned something from the last two fights.
- This time he'll hide under his shell whenever you try to jump on him. When he comes out of his shell, he'll throw a Koopa shell at you. Jump on the Koopa shell, pick it up and throw it back at him to knock him on his back. While he's on his back, ground pound him.
- It only takes to ground pounds to defeat him. Fireballs are still effective and will still take him down in 9 hits.
World 4-4
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 28 - World 4-4 (Time: 10:12)
- Wigglers make their debut in this stage. Just like in Super Mario World, Wiggler's are impervious to jumps and fireballs, but jumping on them will make them very angry. They will turn red and start moving with much more haste and aggression. Because they can't die, you can bounce on them repeatedly to reach high places.
- The ? Block that is in between two brick blocks contains a power-up. You can use the Wiggler to reach it if it happens to be a fire flower.
- For the eight red coins, use the Wiggler to get high enough to collect the top four coins.
- When you come across pit with a platform down below guarded by a Wiggler, jump against the right wall and hold right to land on the platform. The first Star Coin is here. Getting out might be a bit of a hassle, but you're going to have to time your jump a bit late so that you don’t bump your head on the ceiling and kill your jump height. Wall jump off the left and right walls to return to the top level.
- Continue to the right, across the donut bridge and hit the left brick block to create a vine. Don't forget to hit the power-up block to the left as well.
- Climb up the vine and go left. Next to the brick block is an invisible block that will cause a vine to emerge. Climb the vine and jump to the left to grab the next Star Coin.
- Now head to the right and slide down the slopes. When you reach the end you'll see the third Star Coin suspended near the bottom of a pit. To grab it, wall slide on the left wall and then wall jump when you collect the coin.
- Now just jump on the Wigglers and Koopas all the way until you reach the pipe at the end.
- Jump on the flagpole and end the level.
World 4-Ghost House
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 29 - World 4-Ghost House (Time: 3:44)
- TIP: In order to get the third Star Coin and unlock the warp canon for this level, you're going to need a Tiny Mushroom. Either find a mushroom shop or go back to world 1-4 to grab one. Note that if you get it at World 1-4, you need to complete the level in order to keep the power-up.
- The first ? Block here will contain a power-up, but you're going to want to bypass it if you've got the Tiny Mushroom already.
- Jump across the various platforms and avoid all the boos until you reach a door.
- Enter the door and hit the ? Switch to cause four ? Blocks on strings to fall down. You can hit these blocks if you want, but the real purpose is to jump on top of them so that when they get pulled back up, you go along with them.
- Head right to find your first Star Coin. Jump on the device to be taken to the other side of the wall.
- Continue to the right to meet the Balloon Boos. These guys function the same as normal Boos, only when you're facing them they'll inflate, and when you're facing away from them they'll deflate as they're chasing after you.
- Avoid the Balloon Boos and make your way up the platforms and to the left. You'll find a red switch here that you can hit to cause red platforms to appear. Use the platforms to enter the door on the right side.
- Now head left and hit the other red switch. Wall jump up the newly created walls of red blocks to find your second Star Coin. Fall back down through the opening on the left.
- Branching Path: Hopefully you still have that Tiny Mushroom. Run to the right, past the Balloon Boo and jump off the right wall to get on top of the pipe. Then wall jump off the pipe to get on top of a small platform on the right side. Wall jump up some more and you'll find a door that will lead you to the end of the level. Don't go in the door yet though. Wall jump off the two walls again to find the last Star Coin at the very top.
- Hit the switch again and run to the right side. Jump on the newly created red blocks and enter the pipe.
- Run to the left, jump up the platforms, up the ? Blocks, and to the platform on the right.
- Run to the right to find a door that will take you to the end of the level.
World 4-5
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 30 - World 4-5 (Time: 3:43)
- Head into the pipe.
- You'll finally get to see some Bob-ombs in this level. As you may have guessed, Bob-ombs will walk around aimlessly until you damage them via jumping on them or hitting them with a fireball. From there they have a five second fuse, after which they will blow up and destroy any blocks or enemies in the area, including you.
- Head to the right and hit the block the Bob-omb is standing on to trigger it to explode, allowing you to get the power-up from the ? Block.
- Continue to the right and use a Bob-omb or two to blow an opening in the blocks for you to enter through.
- Be wary of the Spinies on the ceiling; they will fall down and slide towards you when you get close.
- Continue heading right until you hit the halfway marker. Grab the power-up from the nearby ? Block.
- As you proceed forward, you'll see your first Star Coin imprisoned between four blocks. Use a Bob-omb to break one of the sides so you can grab the coin.
- Your second Star Coin will be suspended in the air a little bit further down, also imprisoned by a cage of blocks. The trick here is to make the Bob-omb explode three or four blocks from either end. This is so you can reach the platform when the drawbridge that you're on reaches its highest point.
- Keep on heading right, but take your time because the Spinies are positioned so that if you run too fast, you will run into them as they fall.
- You'll eventually come across an area where Bob-ombs will drop from a pipe on the ceiling. You should also notice that there is a pipe on the bottom with blocks covering the entrance. Use the Bob-ombs to clear the entrance to the pipe and then head inside.
- You should already know what to do here, but to make things easy on yourself, don't start with the sides. Instead, jump on the Bob-omb in the middle, he'll blow up the two blocks below him, then take the Bob-omb on the left and simply drop him in the middle. Now you've freed the final Star Coin with only two Bob-ombs. Exit through the pipe on the right.
- Walk a few steps to the right to find a pipe that will take you to the end of the level.
World 4-6
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 31 - World 4-6 (Time: 5:19)
- Our old friend Nessie is back, and he has grown a lot since the last time you've seen him.
- Head to the right and jump on Nessie's back to begin the cruise.
- He will lower his head automatically, so when you come to the first floating island, jump off and hit the ? Block for a power-up. Jump back on Nessie when he re-emerges.
- You'll soon see a red ring, but getting the red coins in this part makes getting the first Star Coin rather difficult, so just jump on the island and get the coin.
- Jump on the next island and hit the brick block to score some serious coinage before jumping back on to Nessie.
- Continue riding Nessie until you come to a section where Nessie must submerge alone. Jump on to solid ground and avoid the three Piranha Plants. Make your way to the other side and wait for Nessie to arrive to continue the cruise.
- Jump on the next floating island and wait for Nessie to start going under it before you hit the P Block. Once you hit it, butt stomp the ? Block so that the power-up lands on Nessie, jump to the platform holding the second Star Coin and then quickly jump back on to Nessie.
- Duck to avoid the Piranha plants that occupy the pipes in this next area. The Paratroopas shouldn't be too much of a worry, but if the one that travels horizontally gets in your way, jump on him and send his shell into the purple water.
- When you pass the last yellow pipe, move to Nessie's head and get ready to jump to hit the red ! Switch at the top. You only have one shot at this, so make sure your timing is perfect. When you hit it, jump on the red blocks next to the pipe and enter.
- Slide down the slope to take out all of the enemies in one go.
- Grab the third Star Coin and however many regular coins you can.
- Head to the right and hit the ? Block for a 1-Up mushroom, then exit through the pipe.
- A few more steps to the right and you'll find the pipe that leads you to the exit.
World 4-A
- Swing across the vine and then hit the first ? Block for a power-up.
- Continue swinging across the vines as you head towards the right.
- Soon you'll ditch the vines in favor of wheel platforms. Jump on top platform to make the wheel turn to the right, but be sure to jump to the top again before the platform you're on touches the water.
- When you reach the half-way point, hit the middle ? Block for a power-up.
- Continue using the wheel platforms to head rightwards and you'll soon come to the first Star Coin suspended in the air near some Koopas. Its within jumping distance, so just jump to snag it.
- When you reach the next wheel platform, take a look above and you'll see the bottom end of a vine. Hop on to a Koopa and grab the vine. Swing to the right and enter the pipe.
- In this next room, jump on top of the blocks and make your way to the middle where you'll find a P Switch. Hit the switch to turn the blocks to coins and grab the second Star Coin. Exit through the pipe.
- Continue heading right across the Piranha infested pipes. When you reach the last three, enter the smallest green pipe.
- Grab the last Star Coin in here and then exit through the large green pipe.
- Head to the right and you'll reach the end of the level.
World 4-Castle
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 32 - World 4-Big Castle (Time: 7:15)
- Jump on the pendulum platform on to the piece of solid ground and hit the ? Block for a power-up.
- Continue on to the two pendulums and when you get to the end of the second one, get a running start and jump to reach the high platform holding the first Star Coin.
- Jump down and prepare yourself. There are three Thwomps lining the ceiling of the next area. If you run the whole way without stopping, you can get past them. If you're feeling daring, run past the first two and jump over the small blocks to get past the third one. If you want to play it safe, just bait them by moving close and then run past while they're rising back up.
- Wall jump between the purple blocks and the left wall to reach the top without having to deal with the Thwomp that occupies the right side.
- Head to the right to find a really big Thwomp. Let it crash down three times so that it breaks the blocks below. Jump down to get the first Star Coin. Be sure to stay under the blue blocks when it comes down.
- Continue rightwards and hit the next ? Block for a power-up.
- Be careful as you go past the next three Thwomps. Use the bait and run tactic this time as running past them is a bit too risky since you don't have much of a running start.
- After you pass the large Thwomp you'll reach the half-way marker. Continue to the right and hit the ? Block for another power-up.
- A Fireball will jump out of the second pit, so be wary when you jump.
- The nearby ? Block contains a 1-Up. Hit the block when the pendulum swings near so that it doesn't fall into the fire.
- The third Star Coin will be on a small island below the first pendulum. You don't actually have to get off the platform to reach it. Just be on the left edge of the pendulum when it swings to the right.
- Continue across the pendulums and you'll eventually reach the Boss Doors.
Boss - Giant Goomba
- This boss doesn't do much but walk from side to side, so there isn't much to learn about his attacks or patterns.
- Your strategy here is to hit the ? Switch to cause platforms to appear on both sides of the arena. When you jump on these platforms, you will be raised to a height that allows you to jump over the Goomba and ground pound him.
- If the Goomba is running your way, hide in one of the small holes and crouch to avoid getting trampled.
- Three ground pounds and the Goomba will have had enough.
World 5
World 5-1
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 33 - World 5-1 (Time: 4:30)
- The new enemy you see on the left is a Snow Spike. He will toss small snowballs that will quickly grow in size as they roll across the snow.
- Let the Snow Spike take care of the four Goombas in front of you and then make your way to the right.
- Be careful of the snow falling from the trees. It won't damage you, but it will keep you incapacitated long enough for an opportunistic enemy to run into to you.
- The pool of snow underneath the three ? Blocks will keep you from jumping very high. The middle ? Block holds a power-up, so jump on top of it and ground pound it.
- Continue heading right, stomping the Goombas, leaping over the pits and avoiding the falling snow.
- Kill the next Snow Spike and grab the nearby ? Block for another power-up.
- Your first Star Coin will be hanging over a high branch on a tree. To grab it, jump on the ? Block to the right and jump to the left.
- Instead of going through the deep snow, jump across the ? Blocks. There is a Snow Spike on top of the slope on the right side who will throw hard to avoid snowballs if you're wading through the deep snow.
- A little further to the right and you'll hit the half-way marker. Hit the ? Block for another power-up.
- You'll see your second Star Coin above more deep snow. To get you can either bounce off the Paratroopa or wait for the flying ? Block to come by. Just don't hit the block before it comes within range of the coin.
- Proceed to the right and you'll eventually come across the final Star Coin flying in the air. You can actually get this with a running jump, or you can hit the smiling block a couple of times to give you extra height.
- Hit the smiling block three times to create a barrier that will prevent you from getting hit by the Snow Spike's snowballs. Then jump on top of the blocks, jump on the Snow Spike and continue onwards.
- There is another Snow Spike above who will throw snowballs across the pit. Time your jump so you don't get hit by the snowball.
- Be extra careful of the falling snow here. There are many enemies around and it's very easy to jump into the snow as it's falling. Take your time.
- A little further to the right and you'll be able to end the level.
World 5-2
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 34 - World 5-2 (Time: 7:26)
- As always, head into the pipe to truly start off the level.
- If you want a lot of coins, make your way to the top of all of these blocks and run across.
- Otherwise, just run to the right. Once you get to the pit, slow down or you'll run into a Spike Top. Hit the ? Block for a power-up.
- As you probably noticed, the ice here is very slippery. Don't go too fast in this next area or you'll get hit by the bats that come down from the ceiling.
- When you reach the three brick blocks below you, ground pound the one all the way on the left to cause a 1-Up Mushroom to come out. Get through the next step as fast as possible so you can get to the other side and get the 1-Up before it falls into a pit.
- Avoid the Piranhas by ducking and timing your dashes. Don't forget to grab the first Star Coin between the groups of pipes.
- Wall jump off of the right most brick blocks to get into the yellow pipe.
- The coin here will turn into a Coin Purse and will run away as you chase after it. When it gets to the end, use it as a spring board to collect the next Star Coin. Kill the Coin Purse to get a 1-Up and then exit through the pipe.
- Go left and jump on the brick block to hit the ? Block and get a power-up.
- Jump on the spring board when the Spike Tops are on the outer end of the blocks to get the third and final Star Coin.
- In this next area, it doesn't really matter whether you take the top or the bottom path. It's just a matter of whether you'd rather deal with Bats or Spike Tops.
- The next ? Block you see will contain a power-up.
- Continue until your path is blocks by several brick blocks. Go forward as far as you can and then jump to create a path for you to jump through and get on top of the blocks.
- Branching Path: If you want to open up a short cut that will let you skip the next two levels, jump on top of the ice, wait for the piranha in the green pipe to retreat and jump into the pipe yourself. You'll be placed right at an end of level flag pole.
- A little more platforming and you'll reach a pipe on the right side that will take you to the end of the level.
World 5-Tower
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 35 - World 5-Small Castle (Time: 2:26)
- You'll be on a wooden elevator for the entire level until the boss. The main concern are spiked balls that will fall on the elevator and attempt to run you over.
- The first Star Coin will be on the right side of the elevator.
- The right most ? Block in the group of two blocks will contain a power-up.
- You don't have to worry too much about Dry Bones. The spiked balls will take them out permanently.
- The second Star Coin will be right in the middle.
- The first ? Block you see after the star coin will have a power-up.
- When the big spiked ball appears, jump on the platforms and stay close to the top.
- The third Star Coin will be waiting on two brick blocks on the right side.
- When a wall appears that separates the two sides, make sure you're on the right.
- The next ? Block will contain a power-up.
- Enter the Boss Doors for another fight against Koopa Jr.
Boss - Koopa Jr. 5
- Koopa Jr. has traded his defense against your jump attack for a small and slippery stage. Falling off here will kill you, so be careful when you try to change direction.
- Even though you're able to jump on him now, you still won't be able to jump on him twice in a row.
- As always, three jumps, 9 fireballs, two ground pounds, or a combination of the three will be enough to send lil' Koopa packing.
World 5-3
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 36 - World 5-3 (Time: 2:44)
- The first ? Block here has a power-up.
- Ground pound the slope and hold down to go for a nice little ride that will take out all enemies in your way.
- When you run out of steam, you should see a Goomba and a Koopa walking towards you with a platform of ice suspended above. Jump on the Goomba to spring board to the ice above. Here you'll find the first Star Coin. Jump down, but hug the ice wall so you don’t fall into the nearby pit.
- Jump across the pits here as you continue rightwards.
- When you reach the half-way marker, hit the ? Block for a power-up.
- Hit the block above the ? Block to create a vine that will take you to a secret platform in the sky.
- Jump across the platforms here and then when you reach the slope, ground pound and hold down to slide across all of the slopes.
- Drop down through the trail of coins. Wall jump off the two walls to reach the second Star Coin.
- Go left to run into a new enemy called Snailicorns. These guys can't be defeated by jumps or fireballs, but they can be moved by jumps. Jump on their heads to try and knock them into a pit.
- Continue to the left, dealing with all of the Snailicorns along the way, and eventually you'll find the last Star Coin.
- Return to the right and you'll soon come to the end of the level.
World 5-Ghost House
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 39 - World 5-Ghost House (Time: 4:13)
- The new enemies here are known as Broozers. They will run towards you and punch away at anything that gets in their path. You can bait them to destroy blocks that are in your way. Three jumps, one fireball, or one butt stomp will take them out.
- The first ? Block you see here will contain a power-up.
- Work your way up the staircases until you get to the part where a Broozer will break four blocks and come down to chase you. Lead the broozer back up the stairs so that he crashes through the blocks on the right. Go through the area he just opened up and wall jump between the two walls to get the first Star Coin.
- Return back up the stairs to where the Broozer first busted through.
- Head up the stairs, to the left, and travel up the long staircase. Before you reach the top though, run back down full speed and try to jump so that you land on the platform at the left with the door.
- Enter the door and immediately jump on to the blocks to your right. Wall jump off the top left platform to land on the top right platform. You might jump on a Broozer. If you do, just keep jumping on it until it dies, allowing you to land on the platform. Collect the second Star Coin and exit through the door at the bottom. You have to be quick with this or the Broozers will destroy the blocks you need. Thankfully, if you need to try again, just exit and reenter the room.
- Head back up the long staircase and let the Broozer destroy the blocks that seal off the ? Block. Kill the Broozer and hit the block for a power-up.
- Head to the left until you reach another staircase with three brick blocks to the left. There is a branching path ahead. If you don't want to take it, skip to ## of this walkthrough.
- Branching Path: Stand on top of the three brick blocks and jump to reveal three hidden blocks. Jump on the middle hidden block, crouch, and jump to reveal a hidden vine. This vine will take you to a secret door that you can access after the Broozer crashes through the blocks.
- After going through the door you will be placed on a haunted elevator that will shake and try to throw you off. After it stops short, it will go into a free fall and will then rise up really fast. While it is rising, hold right against the right wall. You will run into a room that holds the third Star Coin.
- Hit the brick block to cause a vine to emerge. Take the vine up and follow the path to reach a door that will take you to the end of the level.
- End Branching Path
- Run up the long staircase and follow the path up to find yourself on a haunted elevator.
- The elevator will try to shake you off by tilting violently to the left and right. As long as you try to remain in the middle, you should be fine.
- When you reach the top, head left and go through the door that will take you to the end of the level.
World 5-4
- YouTube: New Super Mario Bros DS Walkthrough - Part 40 - World 5-4 (1/2) (Time: 2:47)
- The yellow mushroom platforms here will go down when you jump on them and the red ones will go up. Keep that in mind as you head through this scrolling level.
- Hit the first ? Block for a power-up.
- As if you had much of a choice, head to the right across the various mushroom platforms while being on the lookout for Bullet Bills.
- When you come across solid land again, hit the ? Block for a power-up.
- Hit the red ring for another chance with the eight red coins.
- After a couple of more platforms, you'll see more solid ground. Jump on the top platform first and get the first Star Coin.
- If you have a Tiny Mushroom, you can go through the small tunnel here and pick up the second Star Coin. If you don't, fall down, get the red Koopa shell, and throw it towards the coin to snag it.
- Continue on until you find more yellow mushroom platforms. The left most ? Block here will have a power-up.
- When you see a green Koopa, take his shell and hold on to it for a bit. Then throw the shell to the right to cause a 1-Up mushroom to emerge out of the ? Block. Follow it down and collect it before it falls off the stage. Be sure to jump over the green shell on its way back though.
- Continue to the right and you'll find the third Star Coin on a lower platform underneath a bridge and two ? Blocks.
- Just a few more mushroom platforms and you'll be at the end of the level.
