New Orleans Evacuation
As Hurricane Gustav bore down on the gulf coast August 30, 2008, New Orleans residents began preparing for evacuation in light of the lessons learned from the evacuation before Hurricane Katrina's landfall on August 29, 2005. Mayor of New Orleans, Ray Nagin, called for a mandatory evacuation of the city on August 30, 2008.
Gustav was a Category 2 hurricane when it hit the U.S. on Monday, September 1, 2008, making landfall near Cocodrie, Louisiana, at 10:30 a.m. EST.1
