Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark begins right where the Shadows of Undrentide (2003) expansion leaves off. The player-character finds a powerful object called the Relic of the Reaper, which grants immunity to death. Upon death, the relic transports the owner to the “Realm of the Reaper,” instead of fully killing them. While residing in Waterdeep after acquiring the relic, the player-character discovers that the dark elf race known as the Drow are attempting to use Undermountain in the Underdark caverns to stage full invasion of the upper world. Upon investigation, you discover that the wizard Halaster, the owner of the Undermountain area underneath Waterdeep, has been captured by the Drow. When you finally reach him in his holding cell, Halaster informs you that the Valsharess (ruler of the Drow) wants to rule both worlds, the Underdark and upper world. You then set out to stop the Valsharess minions and prevent her from invading the upper world.
