Neapolitan Mastiff

"Massive" is a word often used to describe the Neapolitan mastiff. This is an imposing breed set apart by its loose skin, which hangs over the dog's body, while its face is marked by hanging flaps and folds of skin. The Neapolitan mastiff was bred for centuries as a guard dog; it is a loyal and devoted family pet.

Neapolitan Mastiff Health Problems

The Neapolitan mastiff is a giant dog breed, and has some health issues unique to larger dogs, such as cardio myopathy. These dogs also have a shorter life span than many breeds, usually only 7 to 9 years. They suffer from an eye gland problem called cherry eye, which affects Neapolitan mastiffs by age eight months; if it does not clear up by itself, the affected gland will need to be removed by a veterinarian.¹
