Nausea is the feeling of unease and discomfort in the stomach with an urge to vomit. The word nausea is a Latin word with a Greek origin that means "sea-sickness". While generally harmless, it can indicate a more serious underlying condition. When nausea is associated with vomiting, it can cause dehydration.

Some symptoms that may accompany nausea include dizziness, difficulty swallowing, an increase in saliva production, rapid heart rate, change in skin temperature and sweating.

Nausea is not a disease but a symptom. There are many conditions or diseases that don't have anything to do with the stomach that can still cause nausea. Nausea can also be a side effect of many medicines. The consumption of a large amount of sugary foods can also trigger nausea.

Some conditions causing nausea may include motion sickness, pregnancy (commonly referred to as morning sickness), anxiety, depression, migraine headaches ulcers and vertigo.

Some diseases causing nausea may include Celiac disease, alcoholism, diabetes, flu, gastroenteritis, some types of cancer and pancreatitis.

Most medications have nausea as a common side effect, even some anti-nausea medications. Chemotherapy and general anesthesia will also cause nausea.

Treatment for nausea may include avoiding eating solid foods, which is usually easy as nausea is nearly always associated with loss of appetite. There are many anti-nausea medications such as Compazine, Reglan or Zofran. Holistic alternatives for nausea include ginger and acupuncture.
