NCAA Play-in Game Pre-Game Analysis

Mount St. Mary's enters the tournament having qualified by winning the championship tournament in the Northeast Conference. They are lead by the backcourt duo of Chris Vann and Jeremy Goode, who combined to average 29 points per game this season. Counting the conference tournament, the Mountaineers have won 8 of their last 9 games, and have rebounded from an 0-4 start to the season. They've lost their previous two tournament appearances, both times as the #16 seed: to Kentucky in 1995, and to Michigan State in 1999. As for Coppin State, they became the first team in tournament history to qualify for the tournament with 20 or more losses in a season. They accomplished this by capturing the MEAC Tournament title, winning 4 games in 4 days, and all by 2 points or less. The Eagles top scorer this season was Tywain McKee, who averaged 16 points per game, including 33 in the conference tournament against top-seeded Morgan State. The Eagles are making their four all-time tournament appearance: they lost to Syracuse in 1990, lost to Cincinnati in 1993, and after pulling a surprising upset of #2 seed South Carolina in the first round of the 1997 tournament, they lost in the second round to Texas.
