My Effortless Brilliance is a largely improvised drama film that was selected for the 2008 South by Southwest Film Festival. The plot concerns a self-involved novelist who attempts to revive the friendship with his old buddy by joining him on a weekend trip in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. Sean Nelson, lead singer of the Seattle rock band Harvey Danger, is the film's lead actor. Director Lynn Shelton's previous films—including 2005's magical-realist We Go Way back—have also dealt with interpersonal and psychological issues.
