Mutter Museum
The Mutter Museum provides a rare peak back into the often grotesque world of 19th and early-20th Century medicine. Located on the grounds of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, the museum's collections include antique medical instruments, preserved human remains and replicas and plaster casts of biological oddities. One of the museum's most striking exhibits is a preserved, sliced human head, demonstrating the intricacies of the brain and other craniofacial features.
On February 29, 2008, the museum opened an innovative exhibit of contemporary photography: Extraordinary Bodies: Mutter Museum Photographs. The exhibit features photos of the museum's contents, taken by 17 different fine-art photographers. Extraordinary Bodies will run through the end of 2008.
