During the Soviet era it was the capital of the Soviet Union, but since the fall of Communism the market economy has created a more western-style social and retail nexus.

Culture of Moscow
Moscow has many notable art museums, such as the Tretyakov Gallery, Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts and State Historical Museum of Russia. It is a world famous ballet center, home to the Bolshoi Ballet, has two circuses, and has an interesting film making history. Though films are still made in Moscow, during the Soviet era the film making was prolific and central to the propagation of cultural identity.
