Unless the Avs can score some power-play goals (their unit is ranked 29th) and/or keep the Wild from scoring when they have the man advantage (the Avs' penalty killers are 20th), they have little chance to advance."

- It was only five years ago that the upstart Wild stunned the heavily favored Avs in the first round of the playoffs. The Avalanche were two years removed from their second Stanley Cup title, and the Wild were only in their third year of existence. Five years later, the roles are reversed. For Minnesota, they again reached the playoffs with solid defensive play, timely goal scoring, excellent special teams, and effective goaltending. The Jacques Lemaire style of hockey worked in New Jersey and is still working in Minnesota. Niklas Backstrom was solid between the pipes, and the Wild were ranked in the top eight in the league in both power play percentage and penalty killing proficiency. Former Avalanche forward Brian Rolston has found scoring touch in Minnesota to go along with leading scorer Marian Gaborik. Certainly the marquee names belong to Colorado. The return of Peter Forsberg and Adam Foote at the deadline, plus the return from injury of Joe Sakic, helped the Avs make their playoff push. Jose Theodore is the starting netminder for Colorado, but he hasn't been himself for years. He will need to play like the 2002 Jose Theodore, and Colorado will need better play from Ryan Smyth and Milan Hejduk, who both had subpar seasons, if the Avalanche want to advance.
