Prior to his NHL career, Cammalleri attended and played for the University of Michigan Wolverines. He was drafted 49th overall in the 2001 NHL Draft by the Los Angeles Kings. He completed his junior year with the Wolverines, then made his NHL debut with the Kings during the 2002-03 regular season. He split his first few seasons between the NHL and the Kings' American Hockey League affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs. He also played for the Monarchs during the 2004-05 NHL Lockout, leading the team in goals and earning the Willie Marshall Award. He earned a full roster spot with the Kings after the lockout, playing 80 of 82 regular season games. In 2007, Cammalleri represented his native Canada in the World Ice Hockey Championships, helping them take home the gold medal. His contract was up for renewal following the 2006-07 season, but Cammalleri and the Kings were unable to come to an agreement. The deal went to arbitration, and Cammalleri was given a deal worth $6.7 million over two seasons. On June 20, 2008, Cammalleri was traded to the Calgary Flames.
